{"id":49165,"date":"2011-03-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-23T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/23\/march-25-lecture-to-focus-on-link-between-gum-disease-and-diabetes\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:16:57","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:16:57","slug":"march-25-lecture-to-focus-on-link-between-gum-disease-and-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/23\/march-25-lecture-to-focus-on-link-between-gum-disease-and-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"March 25 lecture to focus on link between gum disease and diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt\"><i><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;line-height: 115%\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Diabetes has long been a risk factor for periodontal disease but new research suggests that poor oral health increases the risk for the development of diabetes.<\/font><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">A leading expert on the link between periodontitis and diabetes is the keynote speaker at the annual Professionals&rsquo; Day event, Friday, March 25 at the <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/dentistry\/\"><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">, 40<sup>th<\/sup> and Holdrege Streets in Lincoln.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Maria Ryan, D.D.S., Ph.D., a professor of oral biology and pathology at the <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonybrookmedicalcenter.org\/dental\/\"><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\"> will present the Wentz Memorial Lecture at 1:30 p.m. in the Great Plains Room at the East Campus Union, directly west of the College of Dentistry.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">People who have periodontal or &ldquo;gum&rdquo; disease are at much higher risk for developing insulin resistance which leads to diabetes, Dr. Ryan said. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&ldquo;New studies show that if you are not yet diabetic but you have periodontal disease you are at much higher risk for developing diabetes, emphasizing the importance of good oral health,&rdquo; she said.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Diabetes is an epidemic affecting 24 million people in the United States and 300 million people world-wide who have the disease and another 57 million people who are pre-diabetic in the U.S. alone, she said.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&ldquo;The Centers for Disease Control is looking to health care professionals, including dentists, to aid in the screening process for early detection of diabetes or pre-diabetes allowing for early intervention,&rdquo; Dr. Ryan said.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Dr. Ryan is available for interviews from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 25.
