{"id":49166,"date":"2011-03-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-24T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/24\/unmc-receives-9-million-to-study-chronic-nature-of-hiv-and-its-effects-on-aging\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:16:56","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:16:56","slug":"unmc-receives-9-million-to-study-chronic-nature-of-hiv-and-its-effects-on-aging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/24\/unmc-receives-9-million-to-study-chronic-nature-of-hiv-and-its-effects-on-aging\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC receives $9 million to study chronic nature of HIV and its effects on aging"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><b><i><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Could lead to new ways to prevent and treat HIV-induced disorders<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">The <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/pharmacology\/integrative_translational_neuroscience.htm\"><span><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">Center for Integrative and Translational Neuroscience<\/font><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\"> at the University of Nebraska Medical Center has received a $9 million grant from the <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\"><span><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">National Institutes of Health<\/font><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\"> to investigate the now chronic nature of HIV infection and its interaction with aging. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publicrelations\/HowardFox.htm\"><span><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">Howard Fox<\/font><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">, M.D., Ph.D., a professor in the department of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience and <span>senior associate dean of research and development for the UNMC College of Medicine, <\/span>is the principal investigator on the grant.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">The grant will allow researchers to study how the aging process interacts with HIV and treatments in the now prolonged life-span of infected individuals. The hope is that the research will lead to new means to prevent and treat HIV-induced and other neurodegenerative disorders.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&quot;Fortunately current therapy allows those who are infected with HIV to lead a relatively normal life,&rdquo; Dr. Fox said. &ldquo;However we are finding that many people are not having trouble with the immune effects of viral infection, rather they are affected by other disorders that are associated with aging, such as cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.&rdquo;<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&quot;We want to determine the mechanisms leading to the increase in these disorders in HIV infected people and how we can reduce the impact,&quot; he said.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">It&#8217;s estimated that by 2015 one-half of HIV infected individuals in the US will be 50 years of age or older. The now chronic nature of HIV has been a major advancement in AIDS care, Dr. Fox said. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">While HIV infected individuals are living longer, damaging effects of HIV persist in the brain and may interact with other neurodegenerative disorders. Researchers will investigate new ways to diagnose, predict, treat and prevent brain damage induced by HIV via a systems biology approach.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">The center provides both core support to UNMC investigators for their research as well as developmental grants to stimulate innovative projects. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><i><span style=\"font-size: 9pt;color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
