{"id":49169,"date":"2011-03-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-28T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/28\/unmc-lecture-to-discuss-link-between-social-disparities-and-life-expectancy\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:16:53","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:16:53","slug":"unmc-lecture-to-discuss-link-between-social-disparities-and-life-expectancy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/28\/unmc-lecture-to-discuss-link-between-social-disparities-and-life-expectancy\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC lecture to discuss link between social disparities and life expectancy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b><i>Harvard professor will make two presentations on Thursday<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">When it comes to life expectancy, family history has something to do with it.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">But where you live, your job and educational level have a lot more say in how long you live, said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wjh.harvard.edu\/soc\/faculty\/williams\/index.html\">David Williams, Ph.D.,<\/a> professor of public health at the Harvard School of Public Health and a professor of African and African-American studies and sociology at Harvard University.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Williams will discuss the link between these factors and life expectancy during his lecture at UNMC on Thursday.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&quot;In some U.S. cities, we can predict life expectancy based upon a person&#8217;s street address,&quot; Dr. Williams said. &quot;Patterns of health disparities are often a result of socioeconomic factors. As we identify causes, we can provide interventions to encourage healthier communities and cities.&quot;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The talk &#8212; which starts at noon in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater &#8212; will address how race, socioeconomic status and religious involvement affect physical and mental health.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">In the evening, Dr. Williams will participate in a discussion at Hilton Omaha with invited leaders from various sectors of the community.
