Maurer, M.D.,<\/a> is subject to approval of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraska.edu\/board\/\">University of Nebraska Board of Regents<\/a> at its April 29 meeting.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">&ldquo;Dr. Larsen provides a new spark for the research enterprise at UNMC,&rdquo; Dr. Maurer said. &ldquo;She&rsquo;s very strong in clinical research but understands the importance of basic research. She&rsquo;s very creative. In a short time, she has put together the infrastructure to allow UNMC to better capitalize on federal support.&rdquo;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">Dr. Maurer said one of Dr. Larsen&rsquo;s first tasks will be to recruit an associate vice chancellor for basic research to work with her to continue to grow basic research. <\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-size: 10pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">Dr. Larsen will assume her new duties on July 1. She will succeed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/vc_research.htm\">Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D.,<\/a> who has headed UNMC&rsquo;s research program since 1999, serving first as<\/span> director of research development and then being appointed the first-ever vice chancellor for research in 2002. Dr. Rosenquist is returning to the department of genetics, cell biology and anatomy to continue his research in congenital heart defects.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Under Dr. Rosenquist&rsquo;s leadership, UNMC&rsquo;s research realized exceptional growth. <a href=\"https:\/\/app1.unmc.edu\/publicaffairs\/newsarchive\/view_art.cfm?article_id=2212&amp;sstring=rosenquist\">Funding more than tripled<\/a> going from $30.9 million in 1999 to <a href=\"https:\/\/app1.unmc.edu\/publicaffairs\/newsarchive\/view_art.cfm?article_id=2135&amp;sstring=rosenquist\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;text-decoration: none\">more than $115 million in 2010<\/span><\/a>, and the twin Durham research towers were constructed giving UNMC world-class research facilities.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Larsen joined UNMC in 1987 and has held several key positions. She developed the <a href=\"http:\/\/net.unmc.edu\/ctsearch\/index_unmc.php\">Clinical Research Center<\/a> in 1995 and has been its only director. She has served as chief of the section of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism since 1997. Last year, she was named associate vice chancellor for clinical research.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;This is an exciting time for research,&rdquo; Dr. Larsen said. &ldquo;We are beginning to understand how the body works at a cellular and genetic level and are using that information to tailor medical care to our patients.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;If we can speed the translation of discoveries from the laboratory to the bedside and into the community, we will be successful in growing our research enterprise while also improving overall health.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">&ldquo;Our basic research programs are very strong, and we will continue to focus on strategies to grow basic research at UNMC,&rdquo; Dr. Larsen said. &ldquo;At the same time, we are developing resources that will allow us to further diversify our research portfolio. The College of Public Health and plans for a new Center for Drug Discovery are prime examples of initiatives and resources that will support these new research directions.&rdquo; <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Currently, Dr. Larsen is principal investigator on four grants, including two from the <a href=\"http:\/\/nih.gov\/\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>. Her research isfocused on the metabolic consequences of organ transplantation. She has also conducted clinical trials with Native Americans to create new strategies to prevent diabetes.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">She was named a UNMC Distinguished Scientist in 2010 and has garnered several outstanding teacher awards.
