Three University of Nebraska Medical Center students – Whitney Birkhart, Meghan Cleinmark and Lucas Robinson – have received $1,000 scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year from Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The three are among 171 top undergraduate and graduate medical laboratory students from around the country who were awarded scholarships.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 138,000 new laboratory professionals will be needed in the workforce by 2012, but fewer than 50,000 will be trained. The Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Scholarship Program helps laboratories reduce this staffing shortfall by supporting students interested in pursuing a degree in medical laboratory science.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Awards are available to eligible students in the U.S. pursuing associate, baccalaureate, or master’s degrees in medical laboratory science. Since 2003, more than $1.25 million in scholarship funds have been provided to medical laboratory students through the Siemens-ASCP Student Scholarship Program. <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Medical laboratory personnel perform tests critical to the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease and other health care conditions. Recently, U.S. News & World Report<\/i> declared lab technicians and technologists the "unsung heroes of the health care industry," and <\/font><\/span>medical and clinical laboratory scientists<\/font><\/span><\/a> among "The 50 Best Careers of 2011" in its annual career survey. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n
