The role of nurse midwives in healthy pregnancies is <\/span>the topic of the next Science Café, at 6:30 p.m., <\/span>May 5<\/span>, at red9, 9th<\/sup> and M Streets in Lincoln. <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

Attendees will hear from Karen McGivney-Liechti, a certified nurse midwife with Heart and Hands Womancare at the People’s Health Center, and Barbara Sittner, Ph.D., an <\/span>assistant professor in the <\/span><\/font><\/font>University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing<\/font><\/span><\/a>.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Their presentation is titled “Delivering”- <\/font><\/span>CenteringPregnancy®<\/font><\/span><\/a> to Nebraska.” The <\/span>CenteringPregnancy® model program was introduced through a grant from the March of Dimes in 2009. It is associated with a lower incidence of low birth weight babies, lower incidence of preterm births, and higher breastfeeding rates.  <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Science Cafe is a free educational event sponsored by UNMC and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC, <\/font><\/span>Bio Nebraska<\/font><\/span><\/a> and the <\/font><\/span>Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures<\/font><\/span><\/a>, Science Cafes are held the first Tuesday of each month in Omaha and one Thursday every other month in Lincoln.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

A more scientifically literate populace is a goal in UNMC’s strategic plan. The goal of the committee has been to introduce and get young adults interested in science by presenting it in a casual setting.<\/span><\/p>\n
