{"id":49193,"date":"2011-05-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-02T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/05\/02\/may-3-omaha-science-caf%c3%a9-to-explore-health-disparities\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:16:26","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:16:26","slug":"may-3-omaha-science-caf%c3%a9-to-explore-health-disparities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/05\/02\/may-3-omaha-science-caf%c3%a9-to-explore-health-disparities\/","title":{"rendered":"May 3 Omaha Science Caf\u00e9 to explore health disparities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><i><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Athena Ramos of UNMC College of Public Health will present<\/font><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Health disparities are the topic of the next Omaha Science Caf&eacute; on May 3 at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14<sup>th<\/sup> St. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Athena Ramos, a program coordinator with the <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/crhd.htm\"><span><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">Center for Reducing Health Disparities<\/font><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\"> in the UNMC Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health, will speak from 7 to 8 p.m. Her presentation is titled &quot;Health Disparities: What do <u>WE<\/u> have to do with it?&quot;<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;color: black\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&ldquo;We, as a community, have the ability to influence the outcomes and decrease, even eliminate health disparities,&rdquo; Ramos said.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Health disparities (also called health care inequality in some countries) refer to gaps in the quality of health and health care across gender, racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, geographic location, and socioeconomic groups.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Ramos received a master&rsquo;s degree in Business Administration (MBA) in 2009, a master&rsquo;s degree (MS) in 2004 in Urban Studies, and her bachelor&rsquo;s degree (BS) in 2002 in Public Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>She also received her national certification as a public manager (CPM) in 2008. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">She serves as the president of the Heartland Latino Leadership Conference, vice-chair of the city of Omaha Parks &amp; Recreation advisory board and co-chair of the UNMC Employee Diversity Network. She serves on the board of directors for the Nebraska Minority Public Health Association, Nebraska Kidney Association, Justice for Our Neighbors, and United Way of Midlands Heartland Blueprint.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Science Cafe is a free educational event sponsored by UNMC and other groups to increase the population&rsquo;s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC, <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bionebraska.com\/\"><span style=\"color: blue\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Bio Nebraska<\/font><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\"> and the <\/font><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nebraskacures.com\/\"><span style=\"color: blue\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures<\/font><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">, Science Cafes are held the first Tuesday of each month in Omaha and one Thursday every other month in Lincoln.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Free pizza, available for the first 50 people, will be provided by Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures.
