{"id":49201,"date":"2011-05-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/05\/09\/unmc-college-of-public-health-recognizes-award-winners\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:16:21","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:16:21","slug":"unmc-college-of-public-health-recognizes-award-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/05\/09\/unmc-college-of-public-health-recognizes-award-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC College of Public Health recognizes award winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b><i>Faculty, students and community leaders in public health are cited <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/watanabe_galloway.htm\">Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway<\/a>, Ph.D., associate professor of epidemiology for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/\">College of Public Health<\/a>, received the Excellence in Teaching Award at the college&rsquo;s banquet for faculty, students and alumni.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Director of doctoral programs, Dr. Watanabe-Galloway teaches epidemiology and researches health disparities in cancer and mental health.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;Shinobu has shown excellence in all aspects of her career and it&#8217;s no surprise that her peers honor her,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/El-Mohandes.htm\">Dean Ayman El-Mohandes, M.B.B.Ch., M.D., M.P.H.<\/a> &ldquo;Her motivation, humility, dedication to quality as well as her organizational and leadership skills have been recognized by her grateful students.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Laura Hansen, a graduate research assistant in epidemiology, was one of four winners of the Carruth J. Wagner, M.D. Scholarship in Public Health. Hansen, who volunteered last summer in a make-shift medical clinic in Thiotte, Haiti, is working on her master&#8217;s degree in public health with a concentration in community health education.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The other recipients, all doctoral students, were:<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: -0.5in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>Janelle Jacobson &#8212; who works with the Nebraska Public Health Practice Based Research Network;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: -0.5in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>Anh Nguyen &#8212; who works on the design, methods, analysis and interpretation of health services and policy projects;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: -0.5in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>Lava Timsina &#8212; whose research interests are in the field of social determinants of health and tobacco control. Timsina is winner of this award for the third consecutive year.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The Chancellor Robert D. Sparks, M.D. Awards were given to:<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: -0.5in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>Calista Kirby &#8212; who received the Pre-professional\/Undergraduate Student Scholarship in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. She is working on a bachelor&#8217;s degree in nursing at UNMC&#8217;s College of Nursing-Lincoln Division with plans to obtain a master&#8217;s degree in public health with an emphasis on community education.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: -0.5in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>Diane Sylofski &#8212; who received the $1,500 Public Health Student Research Award. She is in her second year as a doctoral student in health promotion and disease prevention research.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/gpphli\/index.cfm?L1_ID=5&amp;CONREF=23\">Mary Balluff<\/a> received the Sparks Award in Public Health and Preventive Medicine in recognition of her significant contribution to the state&#8217;s public health.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Balluff is the division chief for community health and nutrition services in the <a href=\"http:\/\/douglascountyhealth.com\/\">Douglas County Health Department<\/a> and the principal investigator for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.co.douglas.ne.us\/omaha\/mayor\/mayors-office-home\/archives\/793\">Douglas County&#8217;s Communities Putting Prevention to Work<\/a> grant.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><i><span style=\"color: black;font-size: 10pt\">Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
