{"id":49213,"date":"2011-06-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-03T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/06\/03\/omaha-to-host-national-public-health-conference\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:16:06","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:16:06","slug":"omaha-to-host-national-public-health-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/06\/03\/omaha-to-host-national-public-health-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Omaha to host national public health conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b><i>More than 425 public health officials to attend June 5-8 conference at Qwest Center Omaha<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">All roads lead to Omaha for the College World Series&hellip;.and for public health.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">From June 5-8, more than 425 public health experts will converge on Omaha for the annual meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aphl.org\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Association of Public Health Laboratories<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">It will almost certainly be the largest public health conference ever held in Nebraska, said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/pathology\/hinrichs_steven.htm\">Steven Hinrichs, M.D.,<\/a> professor and chairman of the department of pathology and microbiology at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;This is the first time the APHL has ever held its annual meeting in our region,&rdquo; said Dr. Hinrichs, who also is director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/nphl.org\/\">Nebraska Public Health Laboratory<\/a> at UNMC and a member of the APHL Annual Meeting Planning Committee. &ldquo;We are thrilled that Omaha was selected as the host city. It is the culmination of five years of work in making a case for Omaha and what it has to offer.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The conference will be held at Qwest Center Omaha with the Hilton Omaha Hotel serving as the host hotel.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">One of the featured speakers will be <a href=\"http:\/\/netserv.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/El-Mohandes.htm\">Ayman El-Mohandes, M.B.B.Ch., M.D., M.P.H.,<\/a> dean of the UNMC College of Public Health, which opened its new building &ndash; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/\">Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health<\/a> &ndash; last month.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. El-Mohandes will deliver the Katherine Kelley Distinguished Lecture from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, in Grand Ballroom C of Qwest Center Omaha. His speech will deal with democracy and public health and how l<span style=\"color: black\">eadership and governance can impact the health of individuals and populations. He will discuss how empowerment is essential for resource poor countries reaching their public health goals.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Topics to be discussed at this year&#8217;s meeting include environmental issues, emerging infectious diseases, emergency preparedness, informatics, food safety, newborn screening and global health, said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/jody-devoll\/4\/40b\/228\">Jody DeVoll<\/a>, director of strategic communications for the APHL.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;We&rsquo;re looking forward to a great conference in Omaha,&rdquo; DeVoll said. &ldquo;We think it will be a first class venue for our members.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">She said a highlight activity during the conference will be a dinner and tour of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omahazoo.com\/\">Henry Doorly Zoo<\/a> on Tuesday evening.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Attendees will include public health laboratory directors on the state, county and city level, as well as individuals from organizations with a strong interest in public health laboratory issues.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The APHL mission is to promote the role of public health laboratories in shaping national and global health objectives
