{"id":49215,"date":"2011-06-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-10T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/06\/10\/dr-rupp-to-head-unmc-infectious-diseases-division\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:16:03","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:16:03","slug":"dr-rupp-to-head-unmc-infectious-diseases-division","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/06\/10\/dr-rupp-to-head-unmc-infectious-diseases-division\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Rupp to head UNMC infectious diseases division"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b><i><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Replaces Dr. Phil Smith, who held the post for 13 years<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publicrelations\/MarkRupp.htm\">Mark Rupp, M.D.,<\/a> has been appointed chief of the division of infectious diseases in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/id\/\">Department of Internal Medicine.<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The appointment, which is effective July 1, was announced today by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publicrelations\/lynellklassen.htm\">Lynell Klassen, M.D.,<\/a> professor and chairman of the internal medicine department. &nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Dr. Rupp joined UNMC in 1992. He came from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medschool.vcu.edu\/\">Medical College of Virginia<\/a>, where he completed his internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship and served on the faculty. &nbsp;He received his medical degree from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/\">Baylor College of Medicine<\/a> in Houston and also served as a postdoctoral fellow in microbiology and immunology there.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&ldquo;Dr. Rupp has distinguished himself as a superb clinician and researcher,&rdquo; Dr. Klassen said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re confident that his national reputation will lead to the development of enhanced clinical and research programs in infectious diseases.&rdquo; <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">His primary research interests are in health care-acquired infections and in understanding the mechanisms leading to <span style=\"color: black;font-weight: normal\">staph <\/span>infections.&nbsp;He has received numerous grant awards, holds three U.S. patents, and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and chapters in more than 30 textbooks.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">In 2009, Dr. Rupp served as national president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shea-online.org\/\">Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America<\/a>. Since 1998, he has served as medical director of The Nebraska Medical Center Department of Health Care Epidemiology &ndash; Infection Control.&nbsp;He also initiated the hospital&rsquo;s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and is past medical director of the Clinical Trials Office.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&nbsp;&ldquo;I&rsquo;m honored to assume leadership responsibilities in the ID section,&rdquo; Dr. Rupp said. &ldquo;I look forward to the new challenges, and I anticipate great success for the section by building on the strong foundation established by Dr. (Phil) Smith.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Dr. Rupp assumes the directorship from Dr. Smith, who has led the division for the past 13 years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">While chief, Dr. Smith greatly expanded the ID division. His accomplishments included:&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">recruiting 14 faculty members and doubling the size of the division;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">increasing clinical volume 10-fold and adding the specialty of orthopedic ID;&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">making ID one of the most productive research divisions in internal medicine in terms of extramural grants and scientific publications per faculty member; <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">expanding interaction with the UNMC College of Public Health; and <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">developing the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, one of only three such units in the United States. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&ldquo;Dr. Smith did an incredible job.
