Earlier this year, Dr. Garvin served as program chair for the organization&rsquo;s Specialty Day during its annual meeting in New Orleans. In addition, Dr. Garvin is currently serving as research committee chair on the executive board of The Knee Society and has been a member of the International Hip Society since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Julie Vose, M.D.,<\/strong> chief of UNMC&#039;s hematology\/ oncology division, and <b>Karen Linder<\/b>, creator of the Karen Linder Distinguished Professorship for Women&#039;s Health in the School of Allied Health Professions, will be recognized on June 10 by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcaomaha.org\/\">Women&#039;s Center for Advancement<\/a> as part of their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcaomaha.org\/tribute-to-women-2\/\">27th annual Tribute to Women<\/a>. The event honors exceptional women in the Omaha community who have worked, through action and deed to help women and their children stay safe.and grow strong. For more information or to purchase tickets to the event, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcaomaha.org\/tribute-to-women-2\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>CityMatCH<\/strong> has created the Detroit Institute for Equity Birth Outcomes. The project is aimed at reducing infant mortality in Detroit, where more babies die before their first birthday than in any other large U.S. city. CityMatCH is headquartered at UNMC and is part of the department of pediatrics. It is a freestanding national membership organization of city and county health departments&#039; maternal and child health (MCH) programs and leaders representing urban communities in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>San Ming Wang, M.D.<\/strong>, genetics, cell biology and anatomy, has joined a consortium called COMPLEXO. The consortium facilitates collaboration between researchers applying massively parallel sequencing to understand the genetics of breast and ovarian cancer to advance the discovery of additional breast cancer susceptibility genes. As a member of the consortium, Dr. Wang will contribute genomic data generated from his work with familial breast cancer patients, participate in data analysis and validation, publish results and submit joint grant applications. Other notable members include: Mayo Clinic; Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; City of Hope, California; University of Southern California, Los Angeles; the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute, Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n<p>\nAt the School of Allied Health Professions annual awards ceremony and forum on evidenced-based medicine, three individuals were honored:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Kathleen Volkman,<\/strong>&nbsp;assistant professor of physical therapy education,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/alliedhealth\/sahp_teaching_award.htm\">was honored for Excellence in Teaching<\/a>. She is pictured&nbsp;with <strong>Greg Karst, Ph.D., <\/strong>assistant dean for academic and student affairs, and <strong>Kim Michael,<\/strong> RSTE program director and Joseph &amp; Darlene Anderson Distinguished Professor.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Dennis Strauss, M.D.<\/strong>, a 1968 graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine and chair of the School of Allied Health Professions Capital Campaign Committee since its inception in 2010,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/alliedhealth\/sahp_service_award.htm\">was recognized for his Outstanding Service to the SAHP<\/a>. He is pictured with <strong>Kyle Meyer, Ph.D<\/strong>., senior associate dean of the SAHP and Professor Michael.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Ka-Chun (Joseph) Siu, Ph.D.<\/strong>, assistant professor of physical therapy education&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/alliedhealth\/sahp_research_award.htm\">was honored for Excellence in Research<\/a>. Dr. Siu missed the presentation due to the death of his mother, who was also honored with a photo and a moment of silence among those in attendance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<strong>David Sinclair, Ph.D.,<\/strong> a professor at Harvard Medical School and the person who delivered the Denham Harman, M.D., Ph.D., Lectureship in Biomedical Gerontology at UNMC on April 4, was honored last month as one of <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/70863\/david-sinclair-2014-time-100\/\">Time Magazine&rsquo;s Most Influential 100 People<\/a> for 2014. An aging expert, Dr. Sinclair was cited for identifying a chemical known as NAD that actually reverses the aging process in cells.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Roger Wells, PA-C,<\/strong> a 1987 graduate of UNMC&rsquo;s physician assistant program in the School of Allied Health Professions, is a member of the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services. Wells, who works at Howard County Medical Clinic in St. Paul, Neb., was instrumental in bringing the committee to UNMC&nbsp;last month&nbsp;for one of its annual meetings. He also was featured in an Omaha World-Herald story.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Joint Commission awarded its first-ever patient centered medical home (PCMH) certification to UNMC Physicians for its PCMH at Midtown Clinic.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kevin Garvin, M.D., orthopaedic surgery, has been named treasurer of The Hip Society.
