\n<\/TABLE>Steve Bridges, a staff member at the McGoogan Library of Medicine, died May 25 following a heart attack. He was 56.<\/p>\n

Bridges had been a member of the library staff for nearly 30 years.<\/p>\n

Library director Emily McElroy called Bridges the soul of the library. <\/p>\n

“He represented why we are all here at the library, to help people,” she said. “He wanted to create the best learning environment for students. It was not uncommon for students to bring their parents to meet Steve after the commencement ceremony. Students have shared with us that he made a difference in their education by relieving stress or just by being a friendly person who would ask them how they were doing.”<\/p>\n

“The outpouring of support from students who have known him over the years has been amazing,” said Marie Reidelbach, assistant director for user services.<\/p>\n

Bridges, an Omaha resident, is survived by his father, Bill Bridges (wife, Jodean) of Fremont and mother, Carol Bridges of Omaha. To read Bridges’ obituary in the Fremont Tribune, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nBridges was known among UNMC students for creating and giving away “study dragons,” dragons made from pipe cleaners which supposedly had the power to keep people focused. The library staff is asking students and alumni to send photos of their “study dragons” here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Steve always made himself available as an incredibly encouraging supporter of students, and the study dragons were an icon of his love and commitment to us,” Student Senate President Krupa Savalia said. “I still have my two study dragons from three years ago, and I cherish them greatly!”<\/p>\n

Any student who studied in the library during the evening hours would cross paths with Bridges and would usually develop a connection with him, Savalia said. <\/p>\n

“Steve has no doubt touched the lives of many of our students, often during difficult and stressful times,” she said. “He will missed tremendously.” <\/p>\n

“Steve was a wonderful individual who left all those who came in contact with him feeling better about themselves,” said Dele Davies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We will all miss his warm, caring and compassionate nature as well as his extraordinary rapport with all students, especially international students.”<\/p>\n

The library has a memory book on display, and staff is asking students and colleagues to sign the book and perhaps write a little story about Bridges. The book will be given to his parents.<\/p>\n
