\nWhere art meets science is the focus of the next Omaha Science Café at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th<\/sup> St. Previously scheduled for June 3, the event was cancelled due to inclement weather.<\/p>\n

\nKenneth Bé, head of paintings conservation at the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center and James Temme, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the radiation science technology division in the School of Allied Health Professions at the University of Nebraska Medical Center are the featured speakers.<\/p>\n

\nBé will give an overview of technical examinations used in the art conservation studio and discuss an interesting restoration project of an 1899 painting, Pearl of Venice<\/em> by Thomas Moran, by the Joslyn Art Museum. The restoration is the subject of a special display at the Joslyn this summer.   <\/p>\n

\nIn a unique cooperative venture, the Ford Conservation Center, Joslyn Art Museum and UNMC worked together to produce a high-quality X-ray of the painting to learn more about the artist’s technique and the condition of the painting. Dr. Temme will talk about this part of the project.<\/p>\n

\nScience Cafés involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone (21 and older), and take place in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. A scientist gives a brief presentation followed by a question and answer period.<\/p>\n
