{"id":50210,"date":"2014-08-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-18T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/08\/18\/relationships-routine-relaxation-help-beat-stress\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T20:17:34","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T01:17:34","slug":"relationships-routine-relaxation-help-beat-stress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/08\/18\/relationships-routine-relaxation-help-beat-stress\/","title":{"rendered":"Relationships, routine, relaxation help beat stress"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>In our series about stress, we&#8217;ve covered reasons why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/08\/06\/stress-provides-challenges-in-work-daily-life\/\">working in health care<\/a> has its own unique stress factors and also our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/08\/11\/stress-can-affect-work-performance\/\">brain&#8217;s response to stress<\/a>, which can inevitably shrink the brain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to add to people&#8217;s stress by sharing all this and making anyone feel this is all doom and gloom,&#8221; said Steven Wengel, M.D., psychiatrist and chair, UNMC Department of Psychiatry. &#8220;The good news is we can do something about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wengel says it all begins with the Three Rs: Relationships, Routines and Relaxation.<\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Wengel0806.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:0.85em;line-height:150%\">Steven Wengel, M.D.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>&#8220;Relationships are about having a healthy balance between work and home,&#8221; said Dr. Wengel, but also about cultivating relationships at work. Routines also are important, even though Dr. Wengel says sometimes people equate routines with being in a rut. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Routines are a good thing,&#8221; he said, as they impact important areas in our lives like study, nutrition, spirituality, recreation, exercise and sleep. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Regular aerobic exercise is incredibly good for the brain. It also benefits our heart and is shown to reduce stress and anxiety, elevate our mood and improve concentration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With relaxation, Dr. Wengel emphasized the importance of being mindful. &#8220;We have to decide where to direct our attention,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We can focus on future problems and past mistakes, or we can make a different choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wengel referred to a flashlight as a metaphor for illustrating how we can direct our thoughts. &#8220;If we choose to shine the flashlight into a certain area, we can change what we&#8217;re thinking about and that can change the way we feel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wengel said this translates to our perceptions, too, meaning, how we interpret events around us. <\/p>\n<p>Here are a few ways Dr. Wengel offers to assess your mindfulness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I drop things because I am distracted thinking about something else.\n<li>I am always in a hurry to get where I&#8217;m going and don&#8217;t remember much of the walk or drive.\n<li>I am &#8220;running on auto pilot&#8221; without being consciously aware of my immediate environment.\n<li>I feel the need to multitask, such as trying to read my e-mails while talking with someone on the phone.<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Being mindful means being in the moment,&#8221; he said. &#8220;When you&#8217;re washing dishes, ask yourself &#8216;what does the soap feel like&#8217;? Do things deliberately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By practicing mindfulness and meditation, your stress levels will reduce.<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\"
