\nThe College of Pharmacy in June hosted a Biopharmaceutical Research and Development Symposium featuring speaker presentations by industry scientists and roundtable discussions with faculty, postdocs and graduate students from UNMC and other local universities. The symposium focused on industry-academic collaboration. Ajit Narang, Ph.D.<\/b>, of Bristol-Myers Squibb, Co., and Ram Mahato, Ph.D.<\/b>, professor and chair of pharmaceutical sciences, served as co-chairs. “There remains significant untapped opportunity in collaborations that can be established between academic scientists, industry practitioners, and government regulators,” Dr. Mahato said. “These interactions strengthen the transformation of science into technology development and commercialization. This was only a first step towards enabling such ties.”<\/p>\n

\nPhysician assistant Robert McNellis<\/b>, senior advisor for primary care at the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, was among the presenters at Advancing Rural Primary Care, a Sept. 11-12 national conference on the effective utilization of physician assistants, hosted by UNMC. The conference brought together health care leaders, managers, academicians, researchers, policy makers, clinicians and students to promote sustainable and optimal primary care in rural and underserved communities by the effective utilization of team-based care. UNMC produced the conference and was among six co-sponsor institutions.<\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>Ira Combs<\/b> will receive the Nebraska Action Coalition’s Outstanding Nursing Service and Leadership award from the Nebraska Action Coalition today during a luncheon held at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Thompson Alumni Center. The luncheon is part of the Future of Healthcare through Leadership and Diversity conference. The award recognizes Combs for his continued commitment to improving the health of citizens of North Omaha. “Ira has shown us that nurses can lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts and he is truly making a difference right here in our community,” said Victoria Vinton, director of the Nebraska Action Coalition.<\/p>\n
