{"id":50518,"date":"2014-09-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-17T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/09\/17\/cdc-names-unmc-psychologist-to-statewide-education-role\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T14:49:00","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T19:49:00","slug":"cdc-names-unmc-psychologist-to-statewide-education-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/09\/17\/cdc-names-unmc-psychologist-to-statewide-education-role\/","title":{"rendered":"CDC names UNMC psychologist to statewide education role"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/mmi\/departments\/mmifaculty\/jenniferburtphd.html\">Jennifer Burt, Ph.D.,<\/a> assistant professor of pediatrics\/psychology at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center&rsquo;s<\/a> Munroe-Meyer Institute, has been selected to serve as an Act Early Ambassador for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#039;s (CDC)<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/actearly\/index.html\">&ldquo;Learn the Signs. Act Early.&quot; program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Burt will play an important role in educating Nebraska&rsquo;s parents, health care professionals, and early educators about early childhood development, warning signs of autism and other developmental disabilities, and acting early on concerns about a child&rsquo;s development.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;Act Early is an important initiative that can help children and families dealing with developmental disabilities to identify difficulties and access services in a timely manner,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/mmi\/departments\/mmifaculty\/jmichaelleibowitzphd.html\">J. Michael Leibowitz, Ph.D.,<\/a> director of MMI. &ldquo;Dr. Burt brings a professionalism and commitment to this important position. She will be a strong and effective advocate and educator as Nebraska&rsquo;s Act Early Ambassador.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\nAs the Nebraska ambassador, Dr. Burt will assist in getting quality, free, research-based materials into the hands of local parents. The LTSAE campaign promotes awareness of healthy developmental milestones in early childhood, tools for tracking each child&rsquo;s development and the importance to act early if there are concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Burt said it will be important for her to work with partners in the rural and urban communities across the state. &ldquo;I&#039;m looking forward to meeting with potential partners and having conversations on how we can work together to improve healthy developmental outcomes for young children,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Burt has been at UNMC since 2007 when she was a pre-doctoral intern. She became a post-doctoral fellow in 2008 and joined the UNMC faculty in 2010. She earned her doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2008, her master&rsquo;s from the University of Notre Dame in 2001 and her bachelor&rsquo;s degree from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn., in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>\nDevelopmental disabilities are common in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;The CDC estimates that one in 68 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder and about one in six children aged 3 to 17 has a developmental disability,&rdquo; Dr. Burt said. &ldquo;Many children with a developmental disability are not identified until after entering school.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;Early intervention can have a significant impact on a child&rsquo;s ability to learn new skills, as well as reduce the need for costly interventions over time. This campaign aims to change perceptions about the importance of identifying developmental concerns early and gives parents and professionals the tools to help.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\nIn a press statement, the CDC said that Dr. Burt was selected as an Act Early Ambassador because of her commitment to improving the lives of children and families and increasing access to services for children with developmental disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Act Early Ambassadors project is designed to develop a network of state-level experts to improve early identification of developmental delay and disability. It is a collaborative project of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/index.html\">CDC&rsquo;s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/mchb.hrsa.gov\/\">Health Resources and Services Administration&rsquo;s Maternal and Child Health Bureau<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amchp.org\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aucd.org\/template\/index.cfm\">Association of University Centers on Disabilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nTo contact <a href=\"mailto:jburt@unmc.edu\">Dr. Burt<\/a> about the campaign, call 402-559-4409.
