{"id":50663,"date":"2014-10-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-08T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/10\/08\/twins-separated-at-birth-focus-of-durham-presentation\/"},"modified":"2014-10-08T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-10-08T05:00:00","slug":"twins-separated-at-birth-focus-of-durham-presentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/10\/08\/twins-separated-at-birth-focus-of-durham-presentation\/","title":{"rendered":"Twins separated at birth focus of Durham presentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>The Durham Museum will bring the presentation &#8220;Identical Strangers,&#8221; featuring sisters Paula Bernstein and Elyse Schein, to UNMC from noon to 12:50 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Sorrell Center, Room 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Bernstein and Schein are identical twins who will share the compelling story of how they were separated shortly after birth as part of a research project on twins, only to be reunited at the age of 35. The sisters&#8217; story provokes questions about whether identity is shaped by genetic makeup, environment or both, providing an excellent complement to &#8220;Identity: An Exhibition of You,&#8221; currently on display at the museum.<\/p>\n<p>Their presentation will focus on the intimacy they share as twins contrasted with the separation they experienced growing up as strangers. Bernstein and Schein are authors of &#8220;Identical Strangers,&#8221; a book named to the MS Society Books for Better Life list as well as a Reader&#8217;s Digest Editor&#8217;s Choice, and featured on NPR, ABC News&#8217; Good Morning America and CNN.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees are invited to bring their lunch.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC and the Durham Museum are partners in the Time Travelers program. The program provides free museum admission for medical center employees, students and their immediate family with a valid identification badge, while also offering lectures, workshops and other events
