Dr. Schumacher appointed to national committee on caregiving<\/b><\/p>\n

Karen Schumacher, Ph.D.,<\/b> associate professor in the College of Nursing, has been appointed to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Family Caregiving for Older Adults. The committee will examine and provide conclusions and recommendations for health delivery system reform and other policies and actions that groups and individuals could institute to reduce the difficulties encountered by family caregivers of older adults and to support their ability to perform critical caregiving tasks.<\/p>\n

\nHuman genetics expert Warren Sanger, Ph.D.<\/b>, of the Munroe-Meyer Institute, will present a biology seminar at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Hosted by the UNK Biology Department, Sanger’s talk is titled “Human Genetics In the Clinical Setting.” He will speak at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, in Copeland Hall, Room 133. The talk is free and open to the public. Dr. Sanger is director of the Human Genetics Laboratory and director of Clinical Genetics at UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute. He is a founding fellow of the American Board of Medical Genetics and board certified as a clinical cytogeneticist and medical geneticist by the American College of Medical Genetics and American Medical Association.<\/p>\n

\nBrandon Grimm, Ph.D.<\/b>, director of the Office of Public Health Practice in UNMC’s College of Public Health, was named president-elect of the Public Health Association of Nebraska (PHAN) at its annual conference Oct. 8-9 in Grand Island. His election marks the first time anyone from academia has been elected to the state association’s leadership. As president, Dr. Grimm will be the face of PHAN. He will promote the organization and assist the executive director with membership and strategic goals during his two-year term. He also will promote PHAN opportunities and work with the board to recommend public health legislation, support new public health policy and secure additional resources for the organization. Dr. Grimm is a recognized resource for practitioners in Nebraska. His relationships with frontline public health professionals have led to his election and appointment to a number of influential boards and committees, including the PHAN board of directors in 2012, the Nutrition Physical Activity and Obesity State Advisory Group, and the State Health Improvement Plans Advisory Committee. <\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>Positive parent-child relationships and reducing child behavior problems in low-income neighborhoods will be the topic of an Oct. 30 lecture for the UNMC College of Nursing by Deborah Gross, D.N.Sc.,<\/b> of Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Gross will address the effect of mental and physical health of young children, especially in low-income neighborhoods and the lessons learned from the Chicago Parent Program. She is scheduled to speak at the University Nebraska-Omaha Thompson Alumni Center as the Second Annual Anna Marie Jensen Cramer Memorial Lectureship in Women’s & Children’s Health & Family Nursing.
