{"id":50945,"date":"2014-11-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-03T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/11\/03\/fifth-annual-bridge-to-care-refugee-health-fair-set-for-nov-8\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T16:15:06","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:15:06","slug":"fifth-annual-bridge-to-care-refugee-health-fair-set-for-nov-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/11\/03\/fifth-annual-bridge-to-care-refugee-health-fair-set-for-nov-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifth annual Bridge To Care Refugee Health Fair set for Nov. 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\nFree health screenings, flu shots and health education on a variety of issues, will be provided at the fifth annual Bridge To Care Refugee Health Fair, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, at Monroe Middle School, 5105 Bedford Ave., Omaha.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe event, which is open to refugees living in the Omaha area, is organized by the Bridge to Care Refugee Program, an interprofessional student-run\/community engaged organization coordinated by&nbsp;the Service Learning Academy in the UNMC College of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe health fair will feature screenings and education to include:<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Blood glucose<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Blood pressure<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Vision<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Nutrition education<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sexual Health<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Vaccinations and immunizations<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lead, bed bugs, and lice<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dental hygiene<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Developmental milestones for youth<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Over-the-counter drug display<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Maternal and child health<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Linkage to care Alegent-Creighton Florence clinic<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Medicaid services<\/p>\n<p>\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kid&rsquo;s Corner activities and health education.<\/p>\n<p>\nFor the past four years, more than 6,000 UNMC students have engaged with more than 2,850 refugees from eight different countries through the program. The initiative brings together students and community leaders, health care providers and community organizations to assess needs, aid in understanding the health care system, and provide services. The project is also aimed to improve cultural awareness among UNMC students, who gain experience in caring for the growing refugee population so they can effectively serve the communities.<\/p>\n<p>\nOther partners: UNMC Colleges of Nursing, Public Health, Pharmacy, and Medicine; UNMC Optic Shop and the Ophthalmology department; Alegent-Creighton Florence Clinic;&nbsp;OneWorld Community Health Center; Planned Parenthood; Creighton Dentistry; College of St. Mary (nursing); Women&rsquo;s Center for Advancement; Southern Sudan Community Association; Omaha Public Schools; Nebraska Regional Poison Center; American Red Cross; Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska; Methodist Health systems; and Department of Health &amp; Human Services, among others.<\/p>\n<p>\nFor more information, contact Elizabeth Elliott at 904-534-7912,&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:chelsea.dean@unmc.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elizabeth.elliott@unmc.edu<\/a>.
