Topics discussed included communication styles, negotiation, networking, promotion and tenure, and career breaks.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe strong initial turnout was no surprise to Susan Swindells, M.B.B.S., director of the equity office at UNMC.<\/p>\n<p>\n&quot;Mentoring was deemed the highest priority among those who responded to an online survey sent to all women faculty earlier this year,&quot; Dr. Swindells said.<\/p>\n<p>\nMore than 30 percent of the 500 women surveyed responded, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe goals of the mentoring group are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nProvide women faculty with the tools, connections and support system necessary to succeed in their academic career.<\/li>\n<li>\nHelp women faculty reach strategic career goals by providing an environment where they can discuss the conflicting demands of work and family.<\/li>\n<li>\nHelp women faculty prioritize the diverse demands of teaching, research and service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThe next session will be held Jan. 22 in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater and will feature brief presentations on promotion and tenure from representatives of each college, followed by a Q&amp;A. Invitations to all women faculty will be forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn response to requests from faculty on remote campuses who cannot attend in person, the January session also will be available via live stream <a href=\"rtsp:\/\/hog.unmc.edu:554\/broadcast\/womenmentoringlive.mp4\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nThe latest version of QuickTime and Java are needed to connect.<\/p>\n<p>\n&quot;Peer mentoring groups add to the professional success of our faculty,&quot; said Rowan Zetterman, M.D., director of faculty mentorship programs at UNMC.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe mentoring office can help other interested groups get started and can be reached at 402-559-5108<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Accessing the live stream<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nBefore beginning, load the latest version of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.videolan.org\/\" target=\"_blanK\" rel=\"noopener\">VLC Player<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>\nAfter software is loaded, reboot your computer and then click on <a href=\"rtsp:\/\/hog.unmc.edu:554\/broadcast\/womenmentoringlive.mp4\">this link.<\/a> (NOTE: In some instances, your preferred browser may not automatically bring up the &ldquo;live&rdquo; stream.
