{"id":51379,"date":"2014-12-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-12-19T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/12\/19\/unmc-administrator-elected-chairman-of-nebraska-state-board-of-health\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T14:52:29","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T19:52:29","slug":"unmc-administrator-elected-chairman-of-nebraska-state-board-of-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/12\/19\/unmc-administrator-elected-chairman-of-nebraska-state-board-of-health\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC administrator elected chairman of Nebraska State Board of Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/mmi\/departments\/mmifaculty\/waynestubergphd.html\">Wayne Stuberg, Ph.D.,<\/a> associate director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/mmi\/index.html\">Munroe-Meyer Institute<\/a> and director of MMI&rsquo;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/mmi\/about\/ucedd\/index.html\">University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD)<\/a>, has been elected chairman of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dhhs.ne.gov\/Pages\/reg_bdhealth.aspx\">Nebraska State Board of Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Stuberg, who has been on the Board of Health since 2010, will begin his one-year term on Jan. 1.<\/p>\n<p>\nAs chairman of the Board of Health, Dr. Stuberg will serve as an advisor to the chief medical officer of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The board oversees the regulation and licensure of health professionals throughout the state of Nebraska and advises HHS on public health issues.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe State Board of Health is a 17-member board appointed by the governor with the consent of a majority of the members of the legislature. The governor is an ex officio member of the board.<\/p>\n<p>\nMembers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\ntwo individuals licensed to practice medicine and surgery,<\/li>\n<li>\none dentist,<\/li>\n<li>\none optometrist,<\/li>\n<li>\none veterinarian,<\/li>\n<li>\none pharmacist,<\/li>\n<li>\ntwo nurses,<\/li>\n<li>\none osteopath or osteopathic surgeon,<\/li>\n<li>\none podiatrist,<\/li>\n<li>\na chiropractor,<\/li>\n<li>\na physical therapist,<\/li>\n<li>\na professional engineer,<\/li>\n<li>\na hospital administrator,<\/li>\n<li>\na credentialed mental health professional, and<\/li>\n<li>\ntwo laypersons interested in the health of the people of the State of Nebraska.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nDr. Stuberg said he was honored to represent UNMC on the state&rsquo;s board.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;Nebraska is facing many critical health care concerns, including access to care in the areas of behavioral health and developmental disability,&rdquo; Dr. Stuberg said. &ldquo;I look forward to working with other members of the board and with HHS staff to identify our state&rsquo;s health care concerns and move to improve them.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;Dr. Stuberg is a talented administrator and a superb health care professional and educator,&rdquo; said Mike Leibowitz, Ph.D., director of MMI. &ldquo;We at the Munroe-Meyer Institute have benefited greatly from his leadership skills, and I&rsquo;m sure he will use those skills to great effect in this important statewide leadership position.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\nA physical therapist, Dr. Stuberg has been with MMI since 1984.&nbsp; He earned his undergraduate, master&rsquo;s and doctorate degrees from UNMC. He is board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, a past president of the Nebraska Physical Therapy Association and past chair of the Board of Physical Therapy for the Department of Health and Human Services&rsquo; Division of Licensure and Credentialing.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Stuberg has served as a consultant for the state of Nebraska on the Governor&rsquo;s Early Childhood Interagency Coordinating Council and also as a member of the Department of Education&rsquo;s Special Education Advisory Council. He is a board member of the Commission for Motion Lab Accreditation, which accredits motion labs in the U.S. He also has served as president of the UNMC Faculty Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Munroe-Meyer Institute&nbsp;is committed to unlocking the potential of children and adults with developmental disabilities and genetic disorders through exceptional patient care, education and research.
