Darryl Eure, pictured above, spoke Monday at the UNMC\/Nebraska Medicine Martin Luther King Jr. Day luncheon. Dr. Eure, who performed a portion of several of Dr. King&#8217;s speeches, is pastor at the Freestone Baptist Church, and a lifetime community activist in civil and human rights in Nebraska. He spoke of his own experiences with segregation in Omaha before beginning the King speech. Keyboardist Nate Asad and drummer Billy Foeman Quartey performed at the beginning and end of the program and local spoken word artist, Felicia Webster, (also known as Withlove, Felicia) performed a piece in honor of Dr. King. UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., also addressed the audience. Organizers estimated an on-site attendance of between 125 and 150 people. To see the presentation, click <a href=\"rtsp:\/\/hog.unmc.edu:554\/tnmc\/mlk01192015.mp4\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><B>Ramos to speak at TEDxUNO on Feb. 28<\/b><br \/>\nCommunity health advocate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unomaha.edu\/tedxuno\/speakers.php#h\">Athena Ramos<\/a>, of UNMC&#8217;s College of Public Health, will be one of the speakers at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unomaha.edu\/tedxuno\/\">TEDxUNO<\/a> on Feb. 28. TEDxUNO speakers will discuss how they define community personally, locally, nationally, and globally and what we can do to better our own communities as we define them ourselves. WCA will honor five to 10 women at the luncheon whose actions have helped women &#8220;Stay Safe and Grow Strong.&#8221; Nominees will be selected by a panel of judges from the community using the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Must be a resident who works and\/or volunteers in the Greater Omaha metropolitan area\n<li>Her achievement and impact on the Greater Omaha metropolitan area\n<li>Her involvement in community activities\n<li>Her demonstrated commitment to the WCA&#8217;s mission of helping women and their families &#8220;Stay Safe and Grow Strong.&#8221;<\/ul>\n<p>Nominations are due Jan. 29. The awards are designed to showcase the region&#8217;s outstanding nursing professionals for their extraordinary contribution to patients, families, the nursing profession and the community. Omaha Magazine will pay tribute to the winners at an awards ceremony this spring and in the May\/June issue of the magazine. To nominate a nurse, please click <a href=\"http:\/\/omahamagazine.com\/nursing\/\">here<\/a>. Completed nominations must include a detailed description of how the nurse&#8217;s actions made an important difference in the lives they serve. All nurses nominated must be currently licensed, practicing registered nurses and work at least 20 hours a week.
