BHECN sponsors film, panel discussion on ADHD<\/b>
\nHoward Liu, M.D., will be moderating a panel discussion following a March 19 showing of the film “Mommy” at Film Streams. The showing, at 6:30 p.m., will be co-sponsored by the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska. “Mommy” follows a single mother caring for a son with ADHD. Tickets are $9, $7 for students, seniors, teachers, military and those arriving by bicycle, and $4.50 for Film Streams members. For more information or to purchase tickets, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nursing students provide older adults free foot care with ‘Happy Feet’ project<\/b>
\nUNMC College of Nursing-Lincoln Division students and faculty provided older adults with free foot care, evaluated circulation in the lower extremities and educated participants on the importance of good foot care at the Senior Health Promotion Center in Lincoln. Students used a new, portable Doppler device that detects blood circulation problems in the feet. The Doppler was purchased with a small grant from the local nursing student honor society, Sigma Theta Tau – Gamma Pi Chapter. The project also is supported by the UNMC College of Nursing Lincoln Division, Sigma Theta Tau and Aging Partners.<\/p>\n

COM Surgery Interest Group sponsors showing of “Code Black”<\/b>
\nThe College of Medicine Surgery Interest Group is hosting a free showing of the film “Code Black”<\/a> at 5 p.m. on March 26 in the Sorrell Center, Room 3001, for all students, residents, faculty, and staff. “Code Black” follows the staff of Los Angeles County Hospital’s emergency department as they work to save a variety of patients while also learning to reconcile their ideals with the realities of working within the U.S. health care system. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion featuring UNMC\/Nebraska Medicine representatives from emergency medicine, trauma surgery, nursing and pastoral care. <\/p>\n

Dr. Frankel named to VNA board<\/b>
\nHarris Frankel, M.D., assistant professor, neurological sciences, has been named to the board of directors for the Visiting Nurse Association. Dr. Frankel is senior vice president and chief medical officer for Nebraska Medicine.<\/p>\n

Gift from Fremont organization supports Alzheimer’s research at UNMC<\/b>
\nA $30,000 gift by the Fremont Area Alzheimer’s Committee to support innovative research at UNMC will help augment the fight against a disease that currently affects 35,000 Nebraskans and more than 5 million persons nationwide. The gift, made to the University of Nebraska Foundation, increases the Fremont committee’s support of Alzheimer’s research at UNMC to more than $62,000 since 2013. The most recent gift was presented last week to Sachin Kedar, M.B.B.S., associate professor in UNMC’s Department of Neurological Sciences and Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, at a special presentation in Fremont.<\/p>\n

Popular Scientist magazine seeks ‘Brilliant Ten’<\/b>
\nPopular Science magazine is seeking candidates for its annual Brilliant Ten awards. Each year, the magazine picks 10 North American-based scientists, doctors or engineers under the age of 38 to represent the most innovative, incisive, creative and groundbreaking researchers in their fields, and profiles them in a special issue. Nominations can be filled out on the attached form<\/a>, which explains the criteria in further detail and provides submission information.
