“Healthiest Nation 2030″ is this year’s theme for National Public Health Week, held today through Friday. <\/p>\n

For the fifth year, the College of Public Health Student Association will coordinate campus and community events in an effort to raise awareness about the critical role public health and prevention play in keeping communities healthy. <\/p>\n

” ‘Healthiest Nation 2030’ is all about rallying around a goal of making the U.S. the healthiest nation in one generation by 2030,” said Ketki Patel, M.D., a Ph.D. candidate in epidemiology and president of the COPH Student Association.<\/p>\n

CDC expert to speak<\/h3>\n

College of Public Health students also are supporting the Grand Rounds presentation by Jordan Tappero, M.D.<\/a>, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Global Health Protection, Center for Global Health, at 1:15 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 3002. Dr. Tappero, who also holds a master’s degree in public health, will present on the “CDC’s Response to Ebola in West Africa.”\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Students have planned events that celebrate public health in different contexts. <\/p>\n

Monday:<\/b>
\nNoon-1 p.m., Maurer Center for Public Health (MCPH), third floor commons:<\/b>
\nBrandon Grimm, Ph.D., director of public health practice, will introduce National Public Health Week. <\/p>\n

Tuesday<\/b>
\nNoon-1:30 p.m., MCPH, Room 3001:<\/b>

\nDr. Grimm and Katie Brandert, workforce and leadership development manager, will lead students in a professional development exercise focusing on leadership. Lunch provided for the first 20 students. <\/p>\n

4:45-7 p.m., Sorrell Center, Room 1005:<\/b>

\nScreening of the movie “Remote Area Medical” will be followed by a panel discussion. Pizza and popcorn provided for the first 50 registrants. <\/p>\n

Wednesday<\/b>
\nNoon-1:30 p.m., MCPH, Room 3001:<\/b>

\nA screening of the movie “Raising of America,” followed by an optional discussion led by Brenda Nickol, director, career services, College of Public Health. Lunch provided for first 20 students. <\/p>\n

Friday<\/b>
\nNoon-1 p.m., MCPH, Room 3013:<\/b>
\nPublic Health Grand Rounds: Jennifer Reich, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology at the University of Colorado, Denver, will discuss vaccine refusal, reproductive rights and the uneven landscape of choice. Lunch provided for first 50 attendees.<\/p>\n

2-4 p.m., MCPH, third floor commons:<\/b>

\n2015 COPH Student Research Conference and “Mix and Mingle.” Participating public health students will present their research to fellow students, faculty, staff and alumni. Two best posters (one public health and one Ph.D.\/M.S.) will be awarded at 3:30 p.m. The prize for the photo scavenger hunt will be awarded immediately afterwards. Light refreshments will be provided.<\/p>\n

Saturday<\/b>
\n8 a.m., meet at MCPH third floor:<\/b> Spring semester volunteer day with Habitat for Humanity. After a welcome by Ali S. Khan, M.D., M.P.H., dean of UNMC’s College of Public Health., volunteers will carpool to a Habitat for Humanity site for a half day. First 50 registrants will receive UNMC T-shirts.
