The Office of Recruitment and Student Engagement’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) will be holding its annual poster symposium from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Truhlsen Events Center on the UNMC campus.<\/p>\n

In all, 56 students will be presenting posters on topics ranging from how social network support and substance abuse impact veterans to how alcohol and electronic cigarette vapors can enhance bronchial problems. <\/p>\n

The UNMC community is invited to the event, which is the culmination of a 10-week, full-time research program for undergraduates. SURP is a collaboration between UNMC departments, institutes, colleges, student services, and graduate specialty areas, designed to allow undergraduate students to become members of research teams and discover firsthand the broad spectrum of research activities occurring at UNMC.<\/p>\n

“SURP is giving undergraduate students a snippet of what a career in research looks like, a first for many of our students,” said Jennifer Kubila, education specialist. “Allowing students the opportunity to speak with the admissions offices of College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Allied Health Professions, and College of Public Health, as well to tour the Biocontainment Unit and various simulation labs provides students an inside look at what UNMC has to offer. I am looking forward to watching the program grow each year, eventually having all UNMC colleges and institutes represented.”<\/p>\n

In addition to being mentored by faculty, SURP students attend weekly seminars provided by UNMC researchers to enhance their knowledge about research careers and the variety of research at UNMC. The laboratory experiences obtained by SURP students enhance their competitiveness for later admission to graduate programs at UNMC. <\/p>\n
