{"id":54088,"date":"2015-11-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-03T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2015\/11\/03\/refugee-health-fair-set-for-nov-14-at-monroe-middle-school\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T17:08:27","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T22:08:27","slug":"refugee-health-fair-set-for-nov-14-at-monroe-middle-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2015\/11\/03\/refugee-health-fair-set-for-nov-14-at-monroe-middle-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Refugee Health Fair set for Nov. 14 at Monroe Middle School"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\nBridge to Care, a student-led interprofessional organization focused on refugee health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, will host its biannual refugee health fair on Nov. 14, from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. at Monroe Middle School, 5105 Bedford Ave., in Benson.<\/p>\n<p>\nMore than 140 UNMC students representing all colleges as well as 22 community vendors will volunteer at the health fair providing health education, screenings, and services to 400 to 500 refugees from Sudan, Somali, Karen and Bhutan.<\/p>\n<p>\nFree services will include flu immunizations as well as vision, dental, body mass index, blood pressure and glucose level screenings. Services will be provided by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nUNMC &#8211; ophthalmology, the Optical Shop, Operation Diabetes and Empower;<\/li>\n<li>\nCreighton University &#8211; Family Medicine Residency Clinic and Creighton University Dental;<\/li>\n<li>\nOne World;<\/li>\n<li>\nCharles Drew;<\/li>\n<li>\nNorth Omaha Area Health Clinic;<\/li>\n<li>\nUnited Health Care;<\/li>\n<li>\nDouglas County Health Department;, and<\/li>\n<li>\nNebraska Department of Health and Human Services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nVolunteers and anyone interested in working with refugees in the health care setting can take advantage of a one-hour refugee cultural orientation, presented by Alana Schriver, refugee specialist for the Omaha Public Schools, at noon on Nov. 6.
