UNMC’s ITS security team cautions that the holidays can provide opportunities for identity theft. Our ITS professionals shared these tips to help minimize the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft this holiday season.<\/p>\n

Carry only the credit cards you need.<\/b>
\nMany shoppers want to carry every credit card they have at all times. Leave any cards you simply wouldn’t use at home in a safe place to minimize credit damage in case your cards are ever lost or stolen.<\/p>\n

Create strong passwords.<\/b>
\nAlways use unique passwords for each shopping website. This will help minimize damage if unwanted users obtain login credentials to one website.<\/p>\n

DON’T click on email ads.<\/b>
\nAlways type in the company’s website address directly in the browser to view the special or promotion. Do not<\/i> click on any links within an email. The links may point you to a fake site that looks authentic, but is an attempt to trick you into providing information that identity thieves can use.<\/p>\n

Shred financial information.<\/b>
Shred everything that may have identifiable information, such as bank statements, medical bills, credit card statements and offers.<\/p>\n

Review your credit card statements closely.<\/b>
\nNothing is 100 percent secure. Always review your credit card statements closely to ensure each transaction is authorized by you. Contact your credit card company immediately if you detect any suspicious transactions.<\/p>\n

If you feel your identity may have been compromised, contact your credit card company, banking institutions, and credit bureaus immediately.<\/p>\n
