\n<\/TABLE>The Rev. Portia Cavitt will deliver the annual keynote address to honor slain civil rights leader, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at noon on Jan. 18 at the lower level of the Storz Pavilion in Clarkson Tower.<\/p>\n

As one of the city’s best attended events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the program is free and open to the public as well as the UNMC community. Rev. Cavitt’s speech is sponsored by both UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.<\/p>\n

Rev. Cavitt is the pastor of Clair Memorial United Methodist Church in Omaha. She is a strong advocate for children, education, justice, and community involvement, working with various other committees and community organizations within the city. She runs Clair’s Summer Leadership Academy for youths ages 4-16.<\/p>\n

She is a board member for Project Extra Mile and the vice president of the North Omaha Community Care Council. She also is a youth mentor, supervises juveniles for community service, is a member of United Way of the Midlands Community Investment Review Team, and volunteers at Wakonda Elementary School. <\/p>\n

Rev. Cavitt participates with the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, Empowerment Network, and the Mayor’s Faith and Community Task Force. <\/p>\n

Lunch will be provided to the first 200 people in attendance. Rev. Calvin Phillips, a musician and choir director at Clair Memorial United Methodist Church, will provide musical accompaniment.<\/p>\n

Public parking is available in Lot 63, which is located at the corner of 39th and Marcy streets, one block south of Leavenworth St. From there a shuttle will transport attendees to Clarkson Tower. The shuttles will run prior to the event from 11:15 a.m. to noon and after from 1 to 1:45 p.m.<\/p>\n
