{"id":54589,"date":"2016-01-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/01\/13\/clinic-offers-care-thats-comprehensive-convenient\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T20:55:54","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T01:55:54","slug":"clinic-offers-care-thats-comprehensive-convenient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/01\/13\/clinic-offers-care-thats-comprehensive-convenient\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinic offers care that&#8217;s comprehensive, convenient"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Today, there are numerous choices available for breast cancer treatment. <\/p>\n<p>Nebraska Medicine&#8217;s new Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic at Village Pointe Cancer Center provides a personalized and comprehensive approach to breast cancer care based on a patient&#8217;s individual needs and wishes as well as the expertise and careful assessment of a team of breast cancer specialists.<\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Ashli0113.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:0.85em;line-height:150%\">Ashli Brehm<\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>&#8220;Patients benefit from getting not just one opinion, but a comprehensive plan developed by a multitude of breast cancer experts using the most recent studies,&#8221; said Sarah Thayer, M.D., Ph.D., professor of surgical oncology at UNMC, surgical oncologist at Nebraska Medicine and physician-in-chief of the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. &#8220;This model allows for enhanced communication between providers and the patient to ensure her goals and individual needs are met.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Located at 175th and Burke streets, west of the Village Pointe shopping center, the clinic offers easy access with care provided in an intimate and comfortable environment. <\/p>\n<p>The multidisciplinary team of experts includes medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, geneticists and social workers. The team helps each patient navigate through the many decisions available in breast cancer treatment in a collaborative approach that is based on a woman&#8217;s personal choices.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout-right\">\n<h3>Services offered<\/h3>\n<p>The array of cancer services offered at the clinic include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comprehensive care plan developed by a multidisciplinary team of experts;\n<li>Consultative services or second options from cancer experts in medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology and plastic and reconstructive surgery;\n<li>Infusion services within private infusion rooms;\n<li>Radiation treatment center;\n<li>Women Imaging Center with state of the art 3D-mammography and MRI capabilities; and\n<li>Amenities and supportive services including wig fittings, a free wig bank, prosthetic and bra fittings, yoga, massage therapy, skin care and make-up lessons specifically geared for people with or recovering from cancer.<\/ul>\n<p>Call 402-559-1600 to refer a patient or to schedule a consultation or second opinion.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;When a patient arrives for an appointment, they will see all of the specialists required for that visit in one setting and one appointment,&#8221; Dr. Thayer said. &#8220;Not only is this saving our patient&#8217;s time but it helps eliminate duplication of tests and services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The multidisciplinary care model that Nebraska Medicine provides has been the ideal setup for my treatment,&#8221; said Ashli Brehm, a Nebraska Medicine patient currently receiving care at the clinic. &#8220;As a mother of three little boys under age 6, leaving the state for care would have been a huge burden on our lives. Instead, I am able to benefit from exemplary care, almost literally in my backyard. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Both my husband and I adore, trust, and are amazed by our care team. And I love that all the doctors are on the same team. When I was diagnosed, they all sat down together and derived my treatment plan. Every time I see each of them, they know the other. It&#8217;s incredible. I am so happy I was referred to Nebraska Medicine. And so are my almost-cancer-free breasts.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The clinic is expected to be able to provide 3-D mammography for all patients by early summer. &#8220;Studies have shown that 3-D mammography when used with standard digital mammograms can bump up breast cancer detection rates and reduce callbacks,&#8221; Dr. Thayer said. <\/p>\n<p>Patients also will be given the opportunity to participate
