Currently, second vice president for the society, Dr. Garvin will join a long list of Hip Society leaders who have made tremendous contributions to the field of orthopedics. His appointment coincides with the society&#039;s 50th anniversary. He will preside over the annual members meeting in October 2017 in Omaha &#8211; the group&#039;s first meeting in Omaha.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>James Armitage, M.D., named deputy editor of the Journal of Oncology Practice<\/strong><br \/>\nThe American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) announced this month that the <a href=\"http:\/\/jop.ascopubs.org\/\">Journal of Oncology Practice (JOP)<\/a> will be printed on a monthly basis and offer new resources to supply oncology professionals with cutting-edge information on cancer care delivery. Doubling its content, the expanded journal also features clinical information from a multidisciplinary care team perspective led by UNMC&#039;s <strong>James Armitage, M.D.,<\/strong> Joe Shapiro Professor of Medicine, as new deputy editor.<\/p>\n<p>\nEach issue of JOP will now expand to include three clinical reviews that will focus on pertinent problems in delivering care. Dr. Armitage has been selected as the deputy editor of the new clinical review section, which provides highly practical, clinical reviews authored by thought leaders in oncology and relevant subspecialties. Additional experts will provide commentaries to accompany each review.<\/p>\n<p>\n&quot;Our goal is to expand on the journal to provide more insight into how we can deliver care efficiently and effectively,&quot; Dr. Armitage said. &quot;These changes will make JOP a go-to resource for practicing oncologists, with information that can help them improve the quality of care they provide.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Dr. Healey receives grant from Multiple Sclerosis Foundation<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Kathy Healey, Ph.D.,<\/strong> assistant professor and nurse practitioner in the UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences, has received a $25,000 grant from the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation for Nebraska Medicine&#039;s Multiple Sclerosis Clinic house call program. The clinic provides coordinated care for those living with progressive MS to serve the unmet needs, challenges, and avoidable complications.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Jeff Akerson, M.D., named chief medical officer for Nebraska Medicine &#8211; Bellevue&nbsp;<\/strong><br \/>\nStarting Jan. 1, <strong>Jeff Akerson, M.D.<\/strong>, has stepped into a new administrative role as chief medical officer for Nebraska Medicine &#8211; Bellevue.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Akerson, a former private practice family medicine physician, now splits his time between seeing patients in suite 250 of the Bellevue Medical Office Building and his administrative duties, which are primarily focused on quality.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/nebraskamedicine.cmail20.com\/t\/r-l-vykgul-dthrjiyujk-n\/\">Watch this video<\/a> where Dr. Akerson describes his community roots, training in both medicine and nursing, leadership ethic and vision for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\n&quot;After practicing medicine full-time and full scope family practice for many years, I am excited about the opportunity to shape the future and build on the quality initiatives of our organization,&quot; Dr. Akerson says.<\/p>\n<p>\n&quot;As we continue to grow, one of the major challenges will be to maintain that high touch, personal, comfortable feel that is so important to those we serve.
