The Nebraska Center for Substance Abuse Research, in collaboration with the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, is hosting a screening of the documentary “Sober Indian\/Dangerous Indian” on Tuesday, March 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium, Room 1002. <\/p>\n

The documentary follows the journey of four alcoholics living on the streets of Whiteclay, Neb., less than 200 yards from their homes on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Each of the four individuals find empowerment through sobriety but also share concerns for others still struggling to overcome their alcohol addiction. <\/p>\n

The film also shines a light on the high rate of fetal alcohol syndrome among children born to families on the reservation, as well as the increased incidence of cirrhosis, suicide and high-risk sexual behavior.<\/p>\n

Film maker, John Maisch, and Native American activist, Frank LaMere, will be present during the screening and will be available to take questions during a panel discussion afterward.
