My clinical, translational, and basic science research efforts are focused on multiple myeloma. In particular, my laboratory is focused on the development of novel agents for myeloma. From a clinical research perspective, I am interested in the incorporation of novel agents into the post-transplant maintenance setting as well as in the newly diagnosed and relapsed\/refractory settings.<\/p>\n<p><b>How I fell in love with medical research:<\/b><br \/>\nI fell in love with laboratory research when I was an undergraduate working on an honors research project in organic chemistry. I knew that I was also interested in pursuing a career in medicine, and I wanted a career which melded both interests. I therefore pursued a dual degree program through the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Iowa. My interest in multiple myeloma began as a hematology\/oncology fellow, and it was during this time that I began to develop my laboratory program focused on drug development for myeloma. I find my career as a physician-scientist to be incredibly satisfying, as I can fully appreciate the bench-to-bedside as well as bedside-to-bench discoveries that culminate in improved outcomes for patients.<\/p>\n<p><b>Degrees:<\/b> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>B.A., chemistry, University of Iowa\n<li>M.D. and Ph.D. (pharmacology) through the Medical Scientist Training Program, University of Iowa\n<li>Internal Medicine Residence and Hematology\/Oncology Fellowship (thru the Physician Scientist Training Program), University of Iowa<\/ul>\n<p><b>Board Certifications:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Internal Medicine\n<li>Hematology\n<li>Medical Oncology<\/ul>\n<p><b>Memberships:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> American Society of Hematology\n<li>American Society of Clinical Oncology\n<li>American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics\n<li>American College of Physicians\n<li>International Myeloma Society\n<li>Society of Hematologic Oncology<\/ul>\n<p><b>Three things people may not know about me:<\/b> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If I hadn&#8217;t pursued chemistry and medicine, I would have become a professional flute player. I still love to play and am always looking for small groups and ensembles with which to play.\n<li>I earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do as a child.\n<li>My guilty pleasure is watching &#8220;Dancing
