Deadline for university-wide award nominations extended to Nov. 18<\/b>
\nThe University of Nebraska has extended the award nomination deadlines for its Faculty Excellence Awards to Friday, Nov. 18 at noon (CST). Each year, NU presents up to six faculty members and one department or unit with the President’s Faculty Excellence Awards, its most prestigious awards for success in the classroom, laboratory and community. Nomination forms, criteria, instructions and information on past winners is available at www.nebraska.edu\/awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

UNMC College of Nursing in Scottsbluff to hold health fair Nov. 17<\/b>
\nThe UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division will host its third health fair on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Scottsbluff. The public is invited. Admission is free. The event, co-hosted by the Scottsbluff and Gering United Chamber of Commerce and the Nebraska Panhandle Area Health Education Center, will be held at the college in the Harms Center at the Western Nebraska Community College, 2620 College Park.<\/p>\n

The fair will include free and low cost health screenings and education on various health topics. UNMC dental hygiene students will offer free oral health screenings. Education booths, including information about diabetes, back injury prevention, anxiety, smoking cessation, mental health, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, were organized and will be staffed by UNMC nursing students. Low cost screenings including cholesterol, lipid and glucose profile, thyroid stimulating hormone levels and other factors, will be available from $25.75 to $45. Screenings will include blood pressure, lung capacity, body composition, blood glucose and oral hygiene. Flu shots will be available for adults for $30 and can be paid for by individuals through Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance.<\/p>\n

Iryna Ethell, Ph.D., to speak at December seminar<\/b>
\nThe UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience and the Developmental Neuroscience Department at the Munroe-Meyer Institute will host a joint seminar Dec. 2 featuring Iryna Ethell, Ph.D.<\/a>, professor of biomedical sciences and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of California Riverside. <\/p>\n

Dr. Ethell will speak on “Understanding the Mechanisms of Fragile X Syndrome: From Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 to Perineuronal Nets and Sensory Hypersensitivity” at 9 a.m. at the Durham Research Center, Room 1002.<\/p>\n

Heidi Keeler, Ph.D., named director of continuing nursing education<\/b>
\nHeidi Keeler, Ph.D., assistant professor in the College of Nursing Omaha Division, has been appointed as the new director of continuing nursing education. She had been serving in an interim capacity.
