Dr. Truhlsen’s birthday celebrated at his namesake building<\/b>
\nStanley Truhlsen, M.D., celebrated his 96th birthday Nov. 13. On Nov. 11, he visited the Truhlsen Eye Institute for a Truhlsen Advisory Council meeting. The council greeted Dr. Truhlsen with a surprise cake. James Gigantelli, M.D., chair of ophthalmology and visual sciences, presented Dr. Truhlsen with his own lab coat, embroidered with his name and his title of professor emeritus. <\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>After a national search, William Glass has joined UNMC as iEXCEL’s Director, Visualization & Technology. Glass is an accomplished 3-D medical modeler\/multimedia artist who offers knowledge and experience in multidisciplinary team management. Glass develops highly visual clinical education materials and has, for example, worked with prototyping materials for HoloLens and other augmented reality applications. <\/p>\n

With a strong bioinformatics background and analytic skills, Glass also brings experience in directing artistic and technical teams in the creation of digital assets that support simulation, education, print and marketing objectives. He has served as the 3-D content and graphics asset manager for one of the leading medical simulation companies, and has delivered more than 35 successful products to market. He received his B.F.A. in studio and fine arts from Auburn University, and his M.S. from the Medical College of Georgia, graduating cum laude<\/I>.<\/p>\n

MMI aids in public launch of Seizure Log Android mobile app<\/b>
\nFamilies dealing with seizures now have access to a new mobile application to help them better manage their health condition. Called a Seizure Log, the Android application was developed collaboratively by the Munroe-Meyer Institute, LIFE, Seizure Tracker, and Element 84. The new mobile application, SeizureTracker.com, has the same management tools as its online site. Users can log and videotape seizures, record medication administrations, record VNS usages, file and store data in the Seizure Library, sync events with their SeizureTracker.com account. They also can graph synchronized events through the Seizure Tracker system. Logging seizures and keeping good records is an essential skill for managing epilepsy. The free app can be downloaded at the Google Play Store<\/a> or iTunes.<\/p>\n

Tara Harper, program associate for University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, assisted with grant writing, project coordination, and app testing. The collaborating organizations on this project are in the process of developing a toolkit of mobile apps to replicate the LIFE Toolkit currently available on the LIFE website<\/a> and in paper format. <\/p>\n

Dr. Gold addresses Academic Physicians Section of AMA<\/b>
\nUNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., delivered a major speech on Nov. 11 at the 2016 Interim Meeting of the Academic Physicians Section of the American Medical Association in Seattle. A former chair of the AMA Council on Medical Education, Dr. Gold discussed where medical education and health care might be headed in the next 40 years.<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaw to discuss his book as part of the Sundance Author Series<\/b>
\nBud Shaw, M.D., professor, surgery, will speak on Nov. 19 at the Sundance Author Series in Sundance, Utah. Dr. Shaw will discuss his book, “Last Night in the OR: A Transplant Surgeon’s Odyssey.” Filmmaker James Redford, son of Robert Redford, will moderate the remarks and Q\/A session. In 1993, Dr. Shaw performed the first of James’s liver transplants, which led to the founding of the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness two years later.
