Katherine Hyde, Ph.D."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><i>This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony for UNMC&#8217;s 2016 Scientist Laureate, Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist and New Investigator Award recipients.<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"callout-right\">\n<h3>The New Investigator Award<\/h3>\n<p>New Investigator Awards go to outstanding UNMC scientists who in the past two years have secured their first funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense or other national sources.<br \/>\nNew Investigators also had to demonstrate scholarly activity such as publishing their research and\/or presenting their findings at national conventions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Name:<\/b> R. Katherine Hyde, Ph.D. (but most people call me Kate)\n<li><b>Title:<\/b> Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, College of Medicine\n<li><b>Joined UNMC:<\/b> September 2013\n<li><b>Hometown:<\/b> Waterville, Maine<\/ul>\n<p><b>Research focus:<\/b><br \/>\nAcute myeloid leukemia (AML)<\/p>\n<p><b>The goal of my research is<\/b> to identify new drug targets and treatments for patients with AML.<\/p>\n<p><b>My research will make a difference because<\/b> current treatments for AML are very toxic and still most patients relapse. Finding more effective and less toxic treatments for AML will make a big difference in the lives of patients and their families.<\/p>\n<p><b>The best advice I&#8217;ve ever been given is:<\/b><br \/>\n&#8220;Dreams don&#8217;t work unless you do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Three things you may not know about me<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the weekends, I mentor a little girl through a program with the YMCA.\n<li>When I was in kindergarten, I told my mother I didn&#8217;t like science because it was for boys.
