\n <\/TABLE>Three national and local experts on community violence will be keynote speakers at an all-day symposium — “Addressing Violence as a Public Health Issue” — on Friday. <\/p>\n

UNMC’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities in the College of Public Health will host a free and open to the public symposium that will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kaneko, 1111 Jones St.<\/p>\n

\n <\/TABLE>The Center works with underserved communities in Omaha to promote health and health equity. Recent research conducted by the Center points to the importance of addressing violence in some of these communities as it has become a significant barrier for community health, efficacy, and solidarity. <\/p>\n

“Violence is an important public health issue, with known risk factors and effective intervention strategies,” said Dejun Su, PhD., director of the Center. “There is a huge concern for safety in the neighborhoods, especially neighborhoods in high-crime areas in Omaha. More social, economic, psychological, and medical services are needed to help victims and families. We must address these issues aggressively.”<\/p>\n

The symposium will feature the keynote speakers in the morning, followed by a lunch provided by the Center. A community panel discussion in the afternoon will conclude with recommendations from the audience on how to move forward. <\/p>\n
