domestic violence in refugee communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>EMPOWER and Bridge to Care will host the Schwartz Center Rounds presentation &#8212; &#8220;Domestic Violence in the Refugee Population&#8221; &#8212; from 11:50 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Eppley Science Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alana Schriver, refugee specialist, Omaha Public Schools;\n<li>Elizabeth Ajongo, Sudanese cultural ambassador, Heartland Family Services;\n<li>Pam Franks, founder and executive director, Embrace the Nations; and\n<li>Tanya Howard, nurse care coordinator, UniNet.<\/ul>\n<p>Heidi Keeler, Ph.D., director of UNMC Office of Community Engagement, will moderate the event.<\/p>\n<p>Following this conference, attendees should be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss how health care professionals can better identify and assist survivors of domestic violence in the refugee population.\n<li>Explain the barriers that exist in prevention, recognition, and treatment of domestic violence in the refugee population.\n<li>Describe how various cultures define and interpret the term &#8220;domestic violence.&#8221;<\/ul>\n<p>Lunch will be provided for the first 50 attendees.<\/p>\n<p>EMPOWER is a student-led, interprofessional initiative with the mission of increasing awareness and providing opportunities for future health care professionals to become involved in efforts to minimize domestic and sexual violence in our community and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Bridge to Care is an interdisciplinary student-run organization that seeks to facilitate positive health care outcomes for recently resettled refugees by discerning group specific needs, aiding in acculturation and health care education, and improving cultural awareness among community health care
