Susanne Shore, first lady of Nebraska, visited the College of Public Health in April to discuss ways to improve the health of the state’s citizens with Dean Ali S. Khan, M.D., M.P.H.<\/p>\n

\n <\/TABLE>“What will it take to make Nebraska the healthiest and most equitable state by 2020?” she asked. “I know that we have the talent here to do it.”<\/p>\n

When the United Health Foundation released its annual state health rankings earlier this year, Nebraska slipped from 10th to 12th place. Obesity is a major challenge in becoming No. 1. Omaha-Council Bluffs also is ranked as the 62nd fattest city in the U.S., according to a 2017 report by WalletHub. <\/p>\n

Since Dr. Khan’s arrival at UNMC in 2014, it has been his mission to support and spearhead UNMC\/Nebraska Medicine efforts to help make Nebraska the healthiest state by 2020 and achieve health equity for the diverse communities in the state. He hopes a collaboration with Nebraska’s first lady will help get people moving, which is a critical first step to reduce obesity, heart disease and cancers and improve mental health, Dr. Khan said.<\/p>\n

Shore, a nurse and public health champion, is passionate about exercise and child welfare issues. She and her husband, Gov. Pete Ricketts, promote the NE 150 Challenge, one of the state’s sesquicentennial activities that challenge Nebraskans to complete 150 miles or more of physical activity throughout the year. Shore recently completed the challenge.<\/p>\n

Dr. Khan has challenged UNMC deans and directors to form teams and try to beat the College of Public Health NE 150 team, with its 60 members who have now logged 5,810 miles. Karoly Mirnics, M.D., Ph.D., director, Munroe-Meyer Institute, and his team lead the way with 6,683 miles and 74 members.<\/p>\n

Campus leaders have taken up the challenge and now there are 286 members on 27 UNMC teams who have logged a total of 34,562 miles.<\/p>\n

“We need to help people understand that investing in themselves with exercise, diet, and other healthy behaviors has a real long-term payoff,” Shore said.<\/p>\n
