{"id":59084,"date":"2017-06-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-06-14T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2017\/06\/14\/unmc-students-to-provide-health-screenings-to-refugees\/"},"modified":"2022-09-27T15:57:49","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T20:57:49","slug":"unmc-students-to-provide-health-screenings-to-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2017\/06\/14\/unmc-students-to-provide-health-screenings-to-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC students to provide health screenings to refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Bridge to Care, a student-led interprofessional organization at UNMC focused on refugee health, will conduct a health fair at Omaha&#8217;s second annual World Refugee Day on June 24.<\/p>\n<p>The free event, sponsored by the Omaha Refugee Task Force, is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Joslyn Art Museum, 2200 Dodge St.  Bridge to Care, a co-sponsor of the event, is supported by the Center for Reducing Health Disparities in the College of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>The health fair will feature 22 community vendors and will provide health education, screenings and service to an expected 400-500 refugees from the Sudanese, Somali, Karen and Bhutanese communities. EMPOWER, another UNMC student-led organization, also will participate. It works to minimize domestic and sexual violence in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Bridge to Care and EMPOWER are two of the four Legacy projects supported by the Office of Community Engagement within Academic Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Free services will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>vision testing;<\/li>\n<li>dental care;<\/li>\n<li>Body Mass Index (BMI);<\/li>\n<li>blood pressure testing;<\/li>\n<li>lead testing; and<\/li>\n<li>glucose level screenings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Information will be provided on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>nutrition;<\/li>\n<li>Medicaid services;<\/li>\n<li>dental hygiene;<\/li>\n<li>physician-patient communication; and<\/li>\n<li>other topics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Contributing health services for refugees will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creighton Family Medicine Residency Clinic;<\/li>\n<li>Creighton University Dental;<\/li>\n<li>One World;<\/li>\n<li>Charles Drew;<\/li>\n<li>North Omaha Area Health Clinic;<\/li>\n<li>United Health Care;<\/li>\n<li>Douglas County Health Department; and<\/li>\n<li>Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Refugee Day also will feature a naturalization ceremony, art activities, education panels, gallery                                   exploration, cultural performances, fashion show and an awards ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>In the past decade, refugees have resettled in Omaha from Sudan, Southern Sudan, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Ukraine, Liberia, Somalia, Burundi, Ethiopia, Burma and Bhutan.<\/p>\n<p>Culturally appropriate food pantry donations &#8212; cornmeal, cooking oil, spices, sugar, flour and yeast, for example &#8212; are welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Others involved in the event include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Akkase Home Health Care;<\/li>\n<li>Cargill;<\/li>\n<li>CoventryCares of Nebraska;<\/li>\n<li>Nebraska Department of Health &amp; Human Services;<\/li>\n<li>International Center of the Heartland;<\/li>\n<li>Joslyn Art Museum;<\/li>\n<li>Lutheran Family Services;<\/li>\n<li>Nebraska Methodist College;<\/li>\n<li>Omaha Public Library;<\/li>\n<li>Nebraska Office of Health Disparities &amp; Health Equity;<\/li>\n<li>Omaha Public Schools;<\/li>\n<li>Refugee Empowerment Center;<\/li>\n<li>Omaha Schools Foundation;<\/li>\n<li>Tyson; and<\/li>\n<li>United Healthcare Community Plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bridge to Care will offer volunteers a refugee cultural orientation with Pam Franks, founder and executive director of Embrace the Nations. Franks will present from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on June 17, in UNMC College of Public Health, Room 3013.
