UNMC College of Medicine faculty received eight grant awards representing more than $700,000 in new funding during the month of April. <\/p>\n

Industry-sponsored grants:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The following industry-sponsored contracts and foundation grants were received.  Information on clinical trials enrolling patients at UNMC can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 Ted Mikuls, M.D.,<\/strong> internal medicine – rheumatology, has received support through the University of Alabama – Birmingham for a study of the safety and effectiveness of the varicella zoster vaccine in patients taking tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors.<\/p>\n

John Davis, Ph.D.,<\/strong> obstetrics\/gynecology, has received support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a study of lipid metabolism and steroidogenesis in the bovine corpus luteum.<\/p>\n

Iraklis Pipinos, M.D., Ph.D.,<\/strong> surgery – general surgery, has received support through the University of Nebraska at Omaha to study the improvement of mobility in peripheral artery disease in patients using an ankle-foot orthosis.<\/p>\n

Hani Haider, Ph.D.,<\/strong> orthopaedic surgery, is the UNMC lead on two separate studies of new devices, including a study of pin-on-disk testers and a wear comparison between different metal alloys, as well as a study of initial fixation and micromotion of uncemented total knee replacements.<\/p>\n

Susan Swindells, M.B.B.S.,<\/strong> internal medicine – infectious diseases, has received support from Johns Hopkins University to assist in their development of the Long-Acting\/Extended Release Antiretroviral Resource Program.<\/p>\n

Dmitry Oleynikov, M.D.,<\/strong> surgery – general surgery, has received support to cover robotic costs for common hernia procedures.<\/p>\n

Diana Florescu, M.D.,<\/strong> internal medicine – infectious diseases, is the UNMC lead on a study of novel systemic antifungal therapy in patients with invasive fungal infections.<\/p>\n

Donald Coulter, M.D.,<\/strong> pediatrics – hematology & oncology, has received support from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to assist in their phase III clinical trial of combination therapy for pediatric patients with acute myeloid leukemia.<\/p>\n
