Dr. Kang to be featured speaker at TEDx Omaha Conference<\/b>
\nLydia Kang, M.D., assistant professor, internal medicine – general medicine, will be one of the nine featured speakers at the TEDx Omaha Conference on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Harper Center on the Creighton University campus. The conference will run from 1 to 5 p.m. The theme of this year’s conference is “Everything Changes.” Cost to attend is $40, and you can register here<\/a>. Dr. Kang will discuss “The Truth About Quackery.” Learn more about Dr. Kang in a 2012 article.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dr. Gilbert to speak visual arts, end-of-life care in dementia<\/b>
\nMark Gilbert, Ph.D., will discuss “Portrait of Dementia: Reflections of the Visual Arts in End of Life Care in Dementia,” from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in the Sorrell Center, Room 2014. (The presentation also will be livestreamed to the Health Science Education Complex in Kearney, Room 102.)<\/p>\n

Dr. Gilbert was awarded his Ph.D in the Medical Sciences Interdepartmental Area (MSIA) program at UNMC in 2014. He also holds a bachelor’s in fine arts. He will discuss the potential of artistic images of dementia to communicate a greater understanding about the condition and the people who live with it. His presentation will feature a series of drawings created by Scottish artist Norman Gilbert of his wife, Pat, as she lay dying in a hospital bed of an Alzheimer’s disease-related illness.<\/p>\n

The presentation is being sponsored by the Aging Interprofessional Group, a group of UNMC students interested in health careers in geriatrics, issues with older adults and the contributions various health professions make when caring for older adults.<\/p>\n

Farnam Festival to feature music, market<\/b>
\nThe Farnam Festival, sponsored in part by Metro Credit Union, will be held Saturday at 40th and Farnam streets. There will be a morning market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and live music from 3-11 p.m. Comedy Central performer Timmy Williams will host the event. UNMC’s Bartee named ‘Friend of Medicine’<\/b>
\nUNMC Vice Chancellor for External Relations Bob Bartee has received the Nebraska Medical Association’s 2017 Friend of Medicine Award. He was nominated for the award by the Nebraska Medical Association’s Board of Directors. The award recognizes non-medical professionals who perform outstanding service to the betterment of the health of the people of the state of Nebraska.<\/p>\n

During the awards ceremony, Bartee, who has been at UNMC since 1980, was lauded as a major force in several significant health initiatives, including the earmarking of 20 percent of Nebraska’s Tobacco Settlement Funds to medical research, directing a portion of the State’s Cigarette Tax to cancer research, creating the Nebraska Cancer Registry, and coordinating efforts to raise funds for the new Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. He also is responsible for securing state support for the nationally-recognized Nebraska Rural Health Education Network, creating the UNMC Health Professions Tracking Center and the UNMC Office of Alumni Relations.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
