Wendy Hind, J.D., Ph.D., named new vice president for university affairs<\/b>
\nUniversity of Nebraska President Hank Bounds, Ph.D., has named Wendy Hind, J.D., Ph.D., a senior strategist with 20 years’ experience in policy making, law and education, as NU’s new vice president for university affairs.<\/p>\n

Hind, who has served as an associate professor and director of law, politics and society at Doane University in Crete since 2010, will begin her new role at NU Jan. 7, pending Board of Regents approval. She brings significant experience in governmental affairs and public policy, including roles as a policy advisor to Gov. Mike Johanns and legal counsel to the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee.<\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>HelenMari Merritt-Genore, D.O., assistant professor at UNMC, has been named a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.<\/p>\n

Dr. Merritt-Genore is an assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. She also is the associate program director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program.<\/p>\n

Her areas of expertise include surgical ablations, coronary surgery, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, as well as general adult cardiac surgery.<\/p>\n

Dr. Merritt-Genore received her D.O. at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. She did her residency in integrated cardiothoracic surgery at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.<\/p>\n

The American College of Surgeons was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient. It is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery and is recognized as an important advocate for all surgical patients. <\/p>\n

Eppley researchers present at national, international conferences<\/b>
\nThree doctoral students working in the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases presented posters at national conferences recently.<\/p>\n

Bailee Slicker, a graduate research fellow in the lab of Joyce Solheim, Ph.D., attended the American Association for Cancer Research-National Cancer Institute-European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer International Conference on Molecular Targets & Cancer Therapeutics, Discovery, Biology & Clinical Applications in Philadelphia in October, presenting a poster and abstract titled “Beta 2-microglobulin Promotes Human Pancreatic Cancer Cell Migration.”<\/p>\n

Carter Barger and Connor Branick, graduate student fellows in the lab of Adam Karpf, Ph,D., attended the American Association for Cancer Research Ovarian Cancer Meeting in Pittsburgh in October. Barger was first author on an abstract and poster titled “FOXM1 induces DNA replication stress, and its bidirectional gene partner RHNO1 participates in the DNA replication stress response, in high-grade serous ovarian cancer.” He was awarded the AACR Scholar in Training Award.<\/p>\n

Retirements announced<\/b>
\nThe UNMC Department of Human Resources has released a list of three retirements spanning the period between Nov. 1 and Nov. 10. Mary Filipi, Ph.D., College of Nursing – Omaha Division, leads the way with 31 years of service. <\/p>\n
