There was a major event in November that should make all of us proud – the American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified the Nebraska Medical Center as a Level I trauma center.<\/p>\n

Why is this so significant? Well, let me detail what makes this so special:<\/p>\n

–Nebraska Medical Center is now the only ACS-verified Level I trauma center in the state, with the nearest other facilities with this designation being in Des Moines, Kansas City and Denver.<\/p>\n

–Nebraska Medical Center was previously designated a Comprehensive Trauma Center only by the state of Nebraska. This ACS designation makes us comparable to the best trauma centers in the country.<\/p>\n

–Achieving ACS verification means Nebraska Medical Center not only provides the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients.<\/p>\n

–We have the capacity and capability to treat any patient’s injury at any time of the day or night.<\/p>\n

–ACS verification means the medical center provides the full breadth of trauma services to the community via 10 dual-board certified trauma surgeons, all who live in the Omaha community.<\/p>\n

–In all, Nebraska Medical Center currently employs more than 50 subspecialty physicians who are experts in trauma surgery, neurosurgery, reconstructive surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, orthopedics, oral maxillofacial surgery, urology, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) and ophthalmology. The hospital also has a dozen physicians certified in pediatric critical care and pediatric surgery.<\/p>\n

Dr. P.J. Schenarts, trauma medical director at Nebraska Medicine, helped lead the certification effort. His perspective on trauma is eye opening. He says trauma is an epidemic – it affects everyone. It is the leading killer of Nebraskans under the age of 44 and the third leading cause of death in older people.<\/p>\n

The ACS certification marks years of hard work by our trauma team to provide the highest level of trauma care possible. Attaining ACS certification is an arduous task. There are five separate levels of verification in the ACS program. Each level has its own set of thorough criteria that must be met in order to achieve ACS verification.<\/p>\n

Level 1 is the highest designation possible.  A team of experienced trauma providers conducts an on-site review and evaluates the criteria against the hospital’s actual performance and then reports these findings back to a board of leaders in the trauma field. They ultimately decide on whether a hospital warrants recognition by the ACS. <\/p>\n

Meeting these rigorous criteria for Level I ACS trauma verification speaks to the commitment and quality of our trauma program. Documentation of the trauma infrastructure and expertise available at the Nebraska Medical Center should be reassuring to residents of Omaha and surrounding communities, since research shows that treatment at a Level I trauma center reduces the risk of death from trauma by 25 percent.<\/p>\n

Speaking of trauma, I also want to acknowledge our youth violence prevention program called Dusk to Dawn (D2D), which recently was one of only 10 programs in the country to be awarded a three-year, $315,000 Clinical Scholars grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).<\/p>\n

Directed by one of our trauma surgeons, Dr. Charity Evans, the D2D program, which was launched last May, brings 12-15 at-risk youth once a month for a two-hour, 30-minute class at UNMC\/Nebraska Medicine. The youth are junior and senior high students between the ages of 13 and 19 who are considered to be at risk for violence.<\/p>\n

The RWJF grant allows growth of D2D’s referral network and offers the program not only at Nebraska Medicine, but also at the youth detention center, juvenile probation and the jail. It will allow expansion of the curriculum from its original two-and-a-half hour, once-a-month format to an eight-week program. This will allow presenters to spend more time with youth discussing those risk factors that might lead to decisions that could put their lives at risk.<\/p>\n

I want to extend my heartiest congratulations to Dr. Evans and her colleagues working on this innovative program. An RWJF grant is extremely prestigious, and it speaks to the quality of the D2D program.<\/p>\n
