In the year 1917, the Russian Revolution erupted, the U.S. entered World War I and future president John F. Kennedy was born. <\/p>\n

In Omaha, University Hospital opened on the western fringe of the city. It was licensed as a 130-bed state charity hospital with two operating rooms surrounded by seats so students can observe the surgeons at work. The cost for one day of care in the hospital was only $3.<\/p>\n

Last October, Robert Wigton, M.D., assistant dean of special projects in the College of Medicine, gave a brief history of the hospital at the 100th anniversary celebration. <\/p>\n

On Jan. 11, the McGoogan Library of Medicine will sponsor Dr. Wigton’s expanded presentation of “The History of the University of Nebraska Hospital and its People” at noon in the Eppley Science Hall auditorium. Box lunch will be available for the first 50 attendees at 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
