{"id":60878,"date":"2018-01-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/01\/17\/new-investigator-jason-mactaggart-m-d\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T15:41:24","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T20:41:24","slug":"new-investigator-jason-mactaggart-m-d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/01\/17\/new-investigator-jason-mactaggart-m-d\/","title":{"rendered":"New Investigator: Jason MacTaggart, M.D."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><i>This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony for UNMC&#8217;s 2017 Scientist Laureate, Distinguished Scientist and New Investigator Award recipients.<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Name:<\/b> Jason MacTaggart, M.D.\n<li><b>Title:<\/b> Associate professor, UNMC Department of Surgery\n<li><b>Joined UNMC:<\/b> 2009\n<li><b>Hometown:<\/b> Cedar Falls, Iowa<\/ul>\n<div class=\"callout-right\">\n<h3>The New Investigator Award<\/h3>\n<p>New Investigator Awards go to outstanding UNMC scientists who in the past two years have secured their first funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense or other national sources.<br \/>\nNew Investigators also had to demonstrate scholarly activity such as publishing their research and\/or presenting their findings at national conventions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> <b>Research focus:<\/b><br \/>\nVascular disease and bleeding<\/p>\n<p><b>The goal of my research is:<\/b> To reduce pain, suffering, and mortality caused by peripheral arterial disease and trauma. <\/p>\n<p><b>My research will make a difference because:<\/b> We have a great team, working in a fantastic environment, already producing some pretty cool things. Rapidly advancing knowledge and technologies are converging to allow medicine and surgery to perform feats once thought impossible. Some of our most exciting projects right now deal with ways to stop people from dying of major bleeding before they arrive to hospitals. The tools we are developing will hopefully be useful to first responders along our highways, and combat medics on the battlefield, to save lives that would once have always been lost. <\/p>\n<p><b>The best advice I&#8217;ve ever been given is:<\/b> To think for yourself and to question authority. These characteristics were deeply instilled into me by my family and have been two of the most consistent traits encountered in the best people I&#8217;ve worked with over the years.  <\/p>\n<p><b>Three things you may not know about me are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My wife, Bree, and I have several dogs.\n<li>I like to fish small rivers and streams.\n<li>I used to be an excellent
