{"id":60902,"date":"2018-01-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/01\/15\/event-examines-health-barriers-for-foster-youth\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T15:41:34","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T20:41:34","slug":"event-examines-health-barriers-for-foster-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/01\/15\/event-examines-health-barriers-for-foster-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Event examines health barriers for foster youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>&#8220;Cracks in Health Care: Consistency for Fostered Youth&#8221; will be the topic of the Schwartz Center Rounds on Wednesday, from 11:50 a.m.-1 p.m. at Eppley Science Hall, Room 3010.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be hosted by Fostering the Future, a UNMC Student Legacy Project. <\/p>\n<p>The speaker will be Schalisha Walker, a youth advisor at Project Everlast, a statewide, youth-led initiative committed to providing resources, connections and support to young adults as they age out of foster care. She  will be joined by three Project Everlast Youth Council members. Jeffrey Downs, president of Fostering the Future, will moderate.<\/p>\n<p>Following this conference, participants should be able to: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Describe experiences that are common to children who are or have lived within the foster care system and those who may be transitioning.\n<li>Discuss how health care professionals can better identify and assist youth of varying ages who are living within the foster care system.\n<li>Explain the barriers that exist in providing consistency in care for youth who have not experienced consistency in their everyday lives.<\/ul>\n<p>Fostering the Future is a student-led Legacy project supported by the Office of Community Engagement within Academic Affairs, focusing on empowering children, adolescents, and young adults in the foster care system to be advocates for their own health care, and to connect them with health resources.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Nebraska Medical Center, Center for Continuing Education designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 <i>AMA PRA Category 1 Credits<\/i><sup>TM<\/sup>. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.<\/p>\n<!-- <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" title=\"cR U m  m Y  qcg
