{"id":61019,"date":"2018-02-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-22T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/02\/22\/event-spotlights-great-plains-black-history-museum\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T15:42:28","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T20:42:28","slug":"event-spotlights-great-plains-black-history-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/02\/22\/event-spotlights-great-plains-black-history-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Event spotlights Great Plains Black History Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>In recognition of Black History Month, Eric Ewing, will give a presentation on &#8220;The History and Origins of Artifacts &#8211; Great Plains Black History Museum,&#8221; at noon on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Durham Research Center, Room 1006.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout-right\">\n<h3>Thank yous<\/h3>\n<p>UNMC&#8217;s Black History Month Planning Committee would like to offer its gratitude to the following partners, for their efforts in making Black History Month a success at UNMC:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Music as Medicine, for donating the piano for &#8220;Gospel Fest&#8221;;\n<li>Sodexo for serving soul food at two on-campus cafeterias twice during the month of February;\n<li>the UNMC Department of Public Relations for advertising throughout the campus; and\n<li>Inclusive Communities for its partnership in the Table Talk Main Event in recognition of Black History Month.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A collection of artifacts from the museum will be on display during the event.<\/p>\n<p>Tthe Great Plains Black History Museum, located at 2221 N. 24th St. in Omaha, is one of 81 museums nationally focused on African-American history, and is the only museum in Nebraska focused on the history of African-Americans. <\/p>\n<p>The museum&#8217;s mission is &#8220;To preserve, celebrate and educate all people of the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout the great plains of America.&#8221;   <\/p>\n<p>Ewing&#8217;s presentation will offer information about the museum and how it connects to and recounts Omaha&#8217;s black history.<\/p>\n<p>February also is the Great Plains Black History Museum&#8217;s annual membership drive. Membership materials will be available at the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Annual membership cost is: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students\/senior citizens (older than 60): $10\n<li>Single membership: $20\n<li>Family membership: $40\n<li>Business membership\/sponsorship: $100\n<li>Sustaining membership: $500<\/ul>\n<p>The Great Plains Black History Museum is open to the public at no charge from 1 to 5 p.m. on
