Falk family shares story at Governor’s Luncheon for Scouting<\/b>
\nThe inaugural Governor’s Luncheon for Scouting was held on Feb. 12. The Falk family, including the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Kim Falk, husband Carl, and sons Andrew and Ethan, were asked to share their scouting story, including being active leaders, supporting twin sons in scouts and how they have successfully modified the Scouting Program for their son Ethan and other individuals of all abilities.<\/p>\n

“Andrew and Ethan have been in Scouts for nine years,” Kim Falk said. “Ethan is proud to have earned 21 merit badges. Even with facing physical challenges, Ethan has earned his archery, swimming and camping badges.<\/p>\n

“Other scouts in our troop have appreciated when we can work with them to make modifications for advancement and participation activities,” she said. “We include scouts of all abilities. One scout will even be going on our High Adventure Trip to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado this summer.”<\/p>\n

Mark Shriver,Ph.D., will receive Outstanding Teacher Award<\/b>

\nMark Shriver, Ph.D., professor and associate director of education in the MMI Department of Psychology, has been selected by the Honorary Degrees and Awards Committee (HDAC) of the UNMC Faculty Senate to receive the UNMC Faculty Senate Outstanding Teacher Award for 2018. Dr. Shriver was nominated by numerous faculty and students from both MMI and the University of Nebraska at Omaha in recognition of his outstanding teaching in the MMI\/UNO collaborative applied behavior analysis master’s degree program.<\/p>\n

Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., will recognize Dr. Shriver, as well as other UNMC faculty receiving awards for meritorious teaching, service or mentoring, at the annual UNMC faculty meeting, which this year will be at 4 p.m. on April 24 in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.<\/p>\n

\nThis month Rachel Utter, a cytogenetic technologist at MMI’s Human Genetics Laboratory, met with U.S. Rep. Don Bacon and His Excellency Lars Gert Lose, Danish ambassador to the United States, as part of a group of students discussing their educational experiences in Denmark. Utter, a Ph.D. candidate in genetics, presented a slideshow of photos taken during the International Student Research Forum in Odense, Denmark, in 2014. She called the forum “an amazing experience” and added that she had met many students from other countries who have become lifelong friends. She will be the UNMC the group leader for the 2018 forum, to be hosted by Griffith University, Gold Coast in Southport, Australia.<\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>Katherine Lichtblau, doctoral student at MMI’s Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (CASD) was a guest presenter at the Region 7 PATH Internal Conference hosted by HETRA (Heartland Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy) in March.<\/p>\n

Lichtblau discussed the autism diagnosis and data, therapy strategies and behavior tools. She also added suggestions for instructors\/therapists so they could better relate to individuals with autism spectrum disorder in order to yield the best results during therapeutic riding.<\/p>\n

“HETRA’s staff was delighted to have Katie present to the Regional Conference. Riding instructors are seeking more knowledge of working with clients on the autism spectrum,” Kim Falk said. “We thank Katie Lichtblau and CASD for everything they do for our community and for their willingness to present at the HETRA Conference.”<\/p>\n
