Michael Lauer, M.D., deputy director for extramural research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming UNMC College of Medicine Research Retreat, to be held from 2 to 7 p.m. June 1 in the Truhlsen Campus Events Center on the first floor of the Sorrell Center.<\/p>\n

New grant funding available<\/h3>\n

Brad Britigan, M.D., dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, has announced that there will be new grant opportunities made available to attendees of the June 1 UNMC College of Medicine Research Retreat. More information will be available at the retreat. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Lauer serves as the principal scientific leader and advisor to the director of the NIH on all matters relating to the substance, quality, and effectiveness of the NIH extramural research program and administration. <\/p>\n

“Dr. Lauer will share his keen insights into the world of present-day extramural research in the country, so we are delighted to have him as the keynote speaker at this inaugural retreat,” said Shelby Kutty, M.D., Ph.D., assistant dean of research and development in the UNMC College of Medicine and one of the co-chairs of the retreat.<\/p>\n

“It will be very interesting to hear from Dr. Lauer about the new NIH initiatives and policies to promote funding opportunities for new researchers, thereby enabling them to achieve earlier research independence,” Dr. Kutty said. <\/p>\n

“Dr. Lauer is an expert in cardiovascular epidemiology and comparative effectiveness. His presentation will stimulate discussion on reining in the costs of health care with comparative-effectiveness research and personalized medicine,” said Howard Fox, M.D., Ph.D., senior associate dean of research and development and one of the co-chairs of the event. <\/p>\n

Dr. Lauer received education and training at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Albany Medical College, Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, and the Framingham Heart Study through the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).<\/p>\n

He spent 14 years at Cleveland Clinic as professor of medicine, epidemiology and biostatistics. During his tenure at the clinic, he led a federally funded, internationally renowned clinical epidemiology program that applied big data from large-scale electronic health platforms to questions regarding the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease. <\/p>\n

From 2007 to 2015, he served as a division director at the NHLBI, where he promoted efforts to leverage big data infrastructure to enable high-efficiency population and clinical research and efforts to adopt a research funding culture that reflected data-driven policy. <\/p>\n

Dr. Lauer has received numerous awards, including the NIH Equal Employment Opportunity Award of the Year and the Arthur S. Flemming Award for Exceptional Federal Service, in recognition of his efforts to grow a culture of learning and accountability.<\/p>\n
