It has been 25 years since Richard Bell, Jr., M.D., last visited UNMC.<\/p>\n

“It’s unbelievable how much the campus has changed,” Dr. Bell said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Bell, who said he had collaborations with researchers at the Eppley Cancer Institute in the late 1980s and early 1990s, said he was especially impressed with the education initiatives utilizing new technologies.<\/p>\n

“UNMC will have the most sophisticated simulation center in the country and is farther ahead than most institutions in terms of virtual and augmented reality,” he said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Bell is the founder of Discourse LLC, a company that creates web-based case scenarios for education and assessment. He also teaches part-time at Temple University School of Medicine and is an adjunct professor and senior surgical educator in the department of surgery. He was the chair of the Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE) when SCORE created a web-based portal to support a national competency-based curriculum for residency training in general surgery. <\/p>\n

Dr. Bell also praised the interprofessional education aspect of medical education at UNMC.<\/p>\n

“A lot of places talk about it but don’t make it happen. The fact that UNMC is very explicit in its focus on this is very admirable,” he said.<\/p>\n
